The 38th Alpine World Ski Championships took place from January 28th to February 13th, 2005 . The men's races were held in Bormio , those of the women in neighboring Santa Caterina . The Italian winter sports resorts were awarded the contract on June 1, 2000 at the FIS Congress in Melbourne .
At the opening ceremony on January 28th, the flag bearers were Petra Haltmayr for Germany, Bruno Kernen for Switzerland and Michaela Dorfmeister for Austria.
At these World Ski Championships, a new discipline was added to the program with the team competition , which resulted in eleven medal decisions for the first time.
Worth mentioning
- Thanks to the slalom bronze from Šárka Záhrobská, the Czech Republic won the first world championship medal in alpine skiing. It had through Olga Charvátová already given with Downhill bronze at the Olympics in 1984 an Olympic medal, but this was still considered for Czechoslovakia.
- There had previously been extra-tour World Cup races for the women in Santa Caterina: On January 6th and 7th there was a downhill run to replace Val-d'Isère and on the 8th and 9th January a giant slalom and slalom to replace Berchtesgaden . But the winners at the time and those placed on the podium remained medalless a month later. This was partly due to the fact that the lighting conditions (solar radiation) had changed considerably within this period.
- The new great hope of the DSV , Maria Riesch , was missing due to an injury. She fell in the Super-G in Cortina d'Ampezzo on January 12th and sustained a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. Also Karin Blaser from the Austrian Ski Federation (broken ankle in the giant slalom training on fell because of an injury Naßfeld January 24) from the possible list of candidates for the world championships. Catherine Borghi had already decided on January 7th, after having only finished 44th in the first of the two downhill runs in Santa Caterina the day before, to end the season early. The Vaudois from Les Diablerets had not yet recovered from the broken bone on her left wrist that she suffered on December 11th in Altenmarkt .
- Even Didier Cuche had to fit: He had an "isolated" torn ACL suffered in his right knee (which on January 4 in giant slalom training in Adelboden ).
- Furthermore, Josef Strobl , who was now eligible to start for Slovenia , as well as Franco Cavegn and Mélanie Suchet could not take part due to injuries or were dropped from the possible selection lists; Suchet even retired from racing shortly after the patellar tendon ruptured on December 3rd.
- Downhill defending champion Mélanie Turgeon also did not take part : on January 6, it was announced that she would no longer be racing this season due to “poor form” and that she would be built up for the coming year (but it did not come to that, she finished hers Career).
- ÖSV runner Brigitte Obermoser announced on January 24th that she would not participate in the World Cup.
- Switzerland, which remained without a win in the World Cup for the entire 2004/05 season (even without a podium for women), failed to win a medal (this was the first time since Portillo in 1966).
