Klementina "Tina" Maze (born May 2, 1983 in Slovenj Gradec , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Slovenian ski racer . The all-rounder competed in all disciplines, but was particularly successful in the giant slalom . Her greatest successes are winning the overall World Cup in the 2012/13 season , two Olympic gold medals and four world championship titles in four different disciplines (Giant Slalom 2011 , Super-G 2013 , Downhill and Alpine Combined 2015 ). In addition, he won three World Cup rankings in the 2012/13 season and seven silver medals (five at World Championships and two at Olympic Games). Maze belongs to the small group of runners who have won World Cup races in all five disciplines .
biography
Junior years and first years in the World Cup
Maze grew up in Črna na Koroškem , where she learned to ski at the age of three. In her youth she also trained volleyball and graduated from high school in Ravne na Koroškem . She celebrated her first international successes in the Whistler Cup . In 1996 and 1998 she won all competitions in her age group. In November 1998 she took part in FIS races for the first time and celebrated her first victory in her fourth race in Val Thorens . She made her debut in the World Cup on January 2, 1999 at the giant slalom in Maribor . In December 1999 and January 2000 she won a European Cup giant slalom, which earned her second place in the discipline ranking.
With 24th place in the giant slalom in Sölden , Maze got her first World Cup points on October 28, 2000. The best result in the 2000/01 season was a tenth place in Maribor. At the same place Maze reached on January 4, 2002 as second in the giant slalom for the first time a podium place in a World Cup race. At the start of the 2002/03 season , she won the Sölden giant slalom on October 26, 2002, sharing this victory with Nicole Hosp and Andrine Flemmen (all at the same time). As the winter wore on, she often dropped out. The best result was still fifth place in the giant slalom at the 2003 World Ski Championships in St. Moritz .
Sporadic successes
In the 2003/04 season , Maze tried to gain a foothold in the fast downhill and Super-G disciplines, but initially did not succeed. By contrast, she finally established herself at the top of the world in the giant slalom in the 2004/05 season . She won the races in St. Moritz , Santa Caterina and Maribor. In addition, on December 11th in Altenmarkt she got her first podium (3rd place) in a Super-G, with starting number 64 and with faster intermediate times than the winner Meissnitzer. The best result at the 2005 World Cup in Santa Caterina was sixth place in the Super-G. Mace's performance in the 2005/06 season was not very consistent . She won the opening race in Sölden for the second time and achieved two more podium places, but on the other hand there were numerous failures and placements in the midfield. When she took part in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , she was ranked twelfth in the giant slalom, just like four years earlier.
Maze struggled to maintain her level of performance in the 2006/07 season . Two fifth places in World Cup Super Gs remained the best result, otherwise results were mostly in the midfield. The 2007/08 season was similarly disappointing - with one exception: Maze completely surprisingly won the downhill run in St. Moritz on February 2, 2008 , benefiting from the increasingly better (faster) slope conditions. Her start number 47 is the highest ever to win a women's World Cup run. In the summer of 2008 Maze broke away completely from the structures of the Slovenian Ski Association and put together her own team, which she has been looked after ever since. In addition, she changed the brand of ski equipment from Rossignol to Stöckli.
Approaching the world's best
The far-reaching changes in the environment paid off. In the 2008/09 season Maze won the World Cup giant slaloms in Maribor and Åre . In addition, she was able to celebrate her first success at a major event by winning the silver medal in the giant slalom of the 2009 World Cup in Val-d'Isère . Maze won the 2009/10 World Cup season in the last giant slalom of the winter. Otherwise, however, it had become so constant that it took fourth place in the overall World Cup ranking. The increase in performance was particularly striking in the slalom discipline, which she had previously neglected and in which she achieved her first podium finish. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she won the silver medal in both Super-G and giant slalom. At the opening ceremony, she appeared as the flag bearer of the Slovenian Olympic team. For the second time since 2005 she was named Slovenia's Sportswoman of the Year .
In the 2010/11 season Maze was on the podium eight times in the World Cup, and at the beginning of March in Tarvisio, after almost a year without a win, she was on the top again - with her tenth World Cup victory, the first in a super combination. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she won another silver medal in the super combined. On February 17, 2011, she achieved the greatest success of her career to date with the world champion title in giant slalom. A month later she won a slalom for the first time at the World Cup final in Lenzerheide and finished the World Cup season in third place in the overall ranking.
In the 2011/12 season Maze reached second place in the overall World Cup ranking behind Lindsey Vonn . She was on the podium at least once in all five disciplines, a total of ten times. However, she couldn't win a race. Her photos of self-designed silver jewelry and a discussion about allegedly non-compliant underwear at the Bad Kleinkirchheim race made for media presence. In 2011 she also announced that she was working for the Italian fashion label Giorgio Armani .
2012/13: season of records
In the first race of winter 2012/13 in Sölden, Maze took the top spot in the overall World Cup standings and did not give up this place until the end of the season. Maze won the first four giant slaloms (Sölden, Aspen , St. Moritz and Courchevel ) and also won the super combined in St. Moritz. There were also six more podium places by the end of the year. As of the end of December, she had scored points in each of the 16 World Cup races of the current season that had been held up to then, stood on the podium eleven times (five of which were on top), and set new records for most World Cup points per calendar year (2180) and most podiums per calendar year ( 19) set up.
After a second place in the parallel race in Munich at the beginning of the year, she won her first Super-G on January 13, 2013 in St. Anton . This makes her one of the few runners who has won World Cup races in all five disciplines in the course of her career . Six days later, with her second place in the downhill from Cortina , she proved that she can achieve podium positions in all five disciplines this season (as in the previous year); She also finished third in Cortina's Super-G on the podium. On January 26, 2013, she secured the giant slalom discipline ranking ahead of time with second place behind Lindsey Vonn in the giant slalom in Maribor. This was the first time that the Giant Slalom World Cup went to a runner from Slovenia. The next day she won the Maribor slalom. At the end of January Maze had more than twice as many points in the overall standings as Maria Höfl-Riesch, who placed second .
At the 2013 World Championships in Schladming , Maze won the Super-G world championship. There was also a silver medal in the super combined and in the giant slalom. On February 24, 2013, she won the Super Combined in Méribel , securing victory in the overall standings nine races before the end of the season. It was the 18th place on the podium of the season, drawing level with the record holders Hanni Wenzel and Pernilla Wiberg . In the following race, the Super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, she became the sole record holder with her 19th podium of the season. On March 2, Maze exceeded the 2000 points set by Hermann Maier in the 1999/2000 season with victory in the downhill run from Garmisch-Partenkirchen . Since then she has also been one of the few who was able to celebrate victories in all disciplines in one season; only Janica Kostelić , Petra Kronberger and Marc Girardelli had achieved this before .
Before the World Cup final in Lenzerheide, Maze had a realistic chance of becoming the first female ski racer to win all five discipline ratings in one season. Since the last descent had to be canceled due to thick fog, this rating went one point ahead of Lindsey Vonn, who has been injured since the World Cup. Before the last slalom of the season, Maze was seven points ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin in the discipline classification . A third place at the end was not enough, however, to decide the ranking, as Shiffrin still overtook her with a win. In the last World Cup race of the season, a giant slalom, Maze achieved the eleventh victory of the season. In the final statement of the overall ranking she had 2,414 points, 1,313 more than Maria Höfl-Riesch, who placed second - synonymous with the highest number of points ever achieved and the greatest advantage . With a total of 24 podium places in one season, she set another record. In October 2013 Maze was awarded the Skieur d'Or .
2013/14: two-time Olympic champion
At the beginning of the 2013/14 season , Maze could not build on the successes of the previous year. In the first 22 World Cup races of the season, she did not make it into the top 10 twelve times (that had only happened twice in the entire 2012/13 season) before she clinched her first win of the season on the descent from Cortina d'Ampezzo. It was the last downhill run before the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi , and she was back in shape in time for this major event: after narrowly missing a medal in the super combination in fourth, she won both the downhill (at the same time as Swiss Dominique Gisin ) as well as the giant slalom and became a double Olympic champion. At the end of the season she finished fourth in the overall World Cup.
2014/15: Two-time world champion
The 2014/15 World Cup season was overall better for Maze. On December 5, 2014, she won the first downhill run of the season in Lake Louise , and a week later she also won the Åre giant slalom. Until the world championships in Vail , she achieved another victory (slalom in Levi ) and four podium places. At the start of the World Ski Championships on February 3, 2015, Maze finished second in the Super-G before she won the gold medals in the Downhill and Alpine Combined. With this she has meanwhile won 13 medals at major events (6 gold, 7 silver) and thanks to another 10 places from four to six, she has already participated in 23 award ceremonies; At the 2011, 2013 and 2015 World Championships and at the 2014 Olympics, she only missed one of the five award ceremonies for the women's alpine races. If the 2010 Olympics are also included, she has contested all 25 races in 5 consecutive major events and finished 23 of them in the top 10.
In the first two World Cup races after the World Cup, she failed in her home country Slovenia in both giant slalom and slalom and made it possible for Anna Fenninger to come closer to her in the overall standings. As a result, an exciting duel developed between the World Cup winners from 2013 (Maze) and 2014 (Fenninger), which remained open until the final in Méribel : Fenninger came as the leader of the overall standings with a 30-point lead and lost 18 points on the descent Maze increased her lead by 20 points in the Super-G and lost 50 points in the slalom, so Maze went into the final giant slalom with an 18 point lead. There it was said after the first round: 1. Fenninger, 2. Maze. It was only in the last two races of the entire World Cup season that it was decided who would win the big ball. Maze initially finished her second run in second behind Eva-Maria Brem , who started immediately in front of her , but Fenninger took the lead in the very last run and thus defended her overall victory from the previous year. After initially bitter disappointment, Maze showed herself to be a fair loser and gave her opponent a necklace from her own collection.
End of career
After the end of the 2014/15 season, there was speculation in numerous media about the possible end of Mazes' career. On May 7, 2015, she announced that she would take a year off and then make a final decision. During the 2015/16 season she worked for Eurosport as a skiing expert. Maze planned to contest a few races in winter 2016/17 and to retire at the end of the World Championship in St. Moritz. Two days before the start of the season, she announced that she only wanted to contest one home race in Maribor in January 2017. Maze contested this race on January 7, 2017. She then resigned from active sport and continued her involvement with Eurosport. In February 2018 she became the mother of a daughter.
