Sofia Goggia (born November 15, 1992 in Bergamo ) is an Italian ski racer . She belongs to the national team of the Italian Winter Sports Federation and is successful in several disciplines. So far, she has achieved World Cup victories in downhill and super-G , and she has also achieved podium positions in giant slalom and combined . Her greatest achievement is winning the gold medal in the downhill at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang .

biography

Goggia grew up in the Valle di Astino, which belongs to the city of Bergamo . She learned to ski at the age of three on the slopes of Foppolo . On January 10, 2008, she contested her first FIS race and was used for the first time in the European Cup just eight days later , but did not start again in this racing series until December 2009. At the Italian Junior Championships in 2009, she won slalom, giant slalom, super-G and combined, and again in 2010, super-G. She had her first international appearances at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2009 in Szczyrk , Poland , where she was 9th in giant slalom and 15th in slalom. This was followed by the 2010 Junior World Championship in Haute-Savoie , France , where she finished 6th in the downhill and 46th in giant slalom, but was eliminated in Super-G and Slalom.

After winning FIS races for the first time in January 2010, Goggia took her first points in the European Cup in March 2010. In the following winter of 2010/2011, she completed only a few races, as she had to end the season due to injury in mid-January. In the 2011/2012 season , Goggia made it to the top in the European Cup. She initially achieved several top 10 results, was third in Jasná's Super G on February 8, 2012, and celebrated her first victory six days later in the Super Combined by Sella Nevea . She won the combined classification and was third in the overall and Super-G classification, although she had to end the season early: After a fall in the giant slalom in Andalo on February 24, 2012, she suffered knee injuries and thus also missed the Junior World Championship 2012 .

World Cup debut 2011

In the World Cup , Goggia started in the giant slalom in Lienz for the first time on December 28, 2011 , but remained without World Cup points for almost two years. In the 2012/13 season Goggia won three races in the European Cup. Although she had never competed in a Super-G World Cup before, she was nominated in this discipline for the 2013 World Championship in Schladming and surprisingly finished fourth, missing the podium by just five hundredths of a second. In the European Cup, she won the downhill classification with two wins. Goggia won his first World Cup points on November 30, 2013 with 7th place in the Super-G at Beaver Creek . A week later, she fell on Lake Louise Downhill, tearing a cruciate ligament in her left knee. So the season ended prematurely for her. Recurring knee problems forced her to end the season prematurely in January 2015.

In the 2015/2016 season , Goggia remained injury-free and was gradually able to re-establish herself in the World Cup, scoring three top 10 results. The best result this winter was 4th place in the Super-G of Soldeu on February 27, 2016. Her final breakthrough to the top of the world came in the following season 2016/2017 . On November 26, 2016, she finished third in the Killington giant slalom for the first time on the podium. A week later, she achieved her first podium finish in a World Cup descent in Lake Louise. By the end of the year she was on the podium a total of six times in four different disciplines. At the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz , she won the bronze medal in the giant slalom. On March 4, 2017, she celebrated her first World Cup victory in the downhill at the Olympic dress rehearsal in Jeongseon . In the Super-G, which was held the following day, she won again.

Olympic victory and victory in the Downhill World Cup

At the beginning of the 2017/2018 season , she achieved three podium places (two third places, one second place) in the first 12 World Cup races. In the 13th race on January 14, 2018, she finally celebrated her first win of the season on the downhill from Bad Kleinkirchheim, in which she, together with Federica Brignone and Nadia Fanchini, also achieved the first Italian triple success in a downhill race. Another victory followed 5 days later in the downhill from Cortina d'Ampezzo.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she won the gold medal in the downhill after two eleventh places in the giant slalom and the Super-G on February 21. She became the first Italian Olympic champion in this discipline. Of her compatriots, only Zeno Colò had previously achieved this in Oslo in 1952 . Even at world championships, the Azzurri had so far only been able to win gold through Paula Wiesinger (1932) or through Coló (1950; 1952, in the latter case the Olympic victory also counted as world championship title). Three weeks later, at the World Cup final in Åre , Goggia secured victory in the downhill discipline standings with a three point lead over Lindsey Vonn . Here, too, the picture is practically the same: For the women it was only Isolde Kostner (2000/01, 2001/02), and for the men, Peter Fill was also able to win twice (2015/16, 2016/17).

Shortly before the start of the 2018/19 World Cup season , Goggia fell while training on the Hintertux Glacier and suffered a fractured ankle. As a result, she missed the first half of the season. Three months later she returned to racing in the Super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and immediately finished second. The World Ski Championships in Åre were also successful with silver in the Super-G.
