Federica ("Fede") Brignone (born July 14, 1990 in Milan ) is an Italian ski racer . She is the daughter of the former ski racer Maria Rosa Quario and is particularly successful in the giant slalom and super-G disciplines . Her greatest success is victory in the overall World Cup in the 2019/20 season . She has also won a World Cup silver medal and an Olympic bronze medal so far.

biography

Brignone grew up in Milan and moved with her family to La Salle in the Aosta Valley at the age of six . There she joined the ski club in the neighboring municipality of Courmayeur . Brignone contested her first FIS races in December 2005, from February 2006 she also took part in the European Cup. Apart from Italian school and junior championships, there were initially no significant successes. She had her first appearance in the World Cup on December 28, 2007 in the giant slalom in Lienz , but was eliminated in the first run. Her breakthrough came in the 2008/09 season: Brignone regularly drove into the top ranks in the European Cup and achieved her first podium in February 2009. She finished the season eleventh overall. Brignone won the gold medal in the combined classification at the 2009 Junior World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , and she was second in the Super-G and third in the combination at the Italian championships.

At the start of the 2009/10 World Cup season , the giant slalom on the Rettenbachferner near Sölden , Brignone finished in 21st place and thus scored the first World Cup points. Five weeks later, on November 28, 2009, she finished third in the same discipline in Aspen , achieving her first podium result. At the Junior World Championships 2010 she also won the silver medal in the giant slalom, at the same time as Lena Dürr . At the 2010 Winter Olympics , she finished 18th in the giant slalom.

As in the previous year, Brignone achieved a podium finish in the World Cup in winter 2010/11 (second place in the giant slalom in Zwiesel on February 6, 2011). At the Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she won the silver medal in the giant slalom. In the 2011/12 season Brignone made it onto the podium in four World Cup giant slaloms, but there was still no victory. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season , Brignone was affected by a painful cyst in her right ankle , which is why she was unable to match the results of the previous year. She therefore decided to have the cyst surgically removed in mid-December and had to take a break for the rest of the season.

In the winter of 2013/14 Brignone was classified six times in the top 10. The following winter she was once on the podium in the giant slalom and achieved seven further top 10 placements, making significant progress in the slalom and super-G disciplines. Another seven top 10 placings, including a third place, were added in the 2014/15 season . She celebrated her first World Cup victory at the start of the 2015/16 season, on October 24, 2015 at the giant slalom in Sölden . The first World Cup victory in a Super-G followed in Soldeu on February 27, 2016 . In the 2016/17 World Cup season , Brignone finally established herself at the top of the world when she was able to classify in the top 10 a total of 13 times. She won the giant slalom from Kronplatz and Aspen as well as the combination from Crans-Montana ; there were three more podium places. She narrowly missed winning the combined World Cup ranking. At the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz , 4th place in the giant slalom was her best result.

In the 2017/2018 season , Brignone was in the top ten in almost all World Cup races that she finished and was able to win in three different disciplines (giant slalom from Lienz , Super-G from Bad Kleinkirchheim and combination from Crans-Montana ). In the downhill from Bad Kleinkirchheim she was only beaten by Sofia Goggia , together with her and Nadia Fanchini she also achieved the first Italian triple success in a downhill race. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she won the bronze medal in the giant slalom. On February 24, 2019, she won the Alpine Combination of Crans-Montana; Since only one combination could be played in the 2018/19 season , she did not receive a crystal ball for first place in the discipline ranking.

In the 2019/20 season , Brignone scored five victories in the giant slalom, super-G and combined disciplines, as well as further podium places in the downhill. For a long time she fought with Petra Vlhová for second place in the overall World Cup. However, when the World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin took a break of several weeks at the beginning of February due to the unexpected death of her father, Brignone was able to overtake her and remained at the top until the end of the season. Ultimately, she benefited in March from the weather-related cancellation of the races in Ofterschwang and the cancellation of the races in Åre and the World Cup finals in Cortina d'Ampezzo due to the coronavirus pandemic . This made her the first Italian overall winner in World Cup history.
