The Rettenbachferner (also Rettenbach Glacier ) is a glacier in the Tyrolean Ötztal ( Austria ), which is made accessible for winter sports by several cable cars .

Location and landscape

The glacier is located to the west above Sölden , on the ridge to the Pitztal , between the Inner Schwarzen Schneid ( 3367  m above sea level ), the Gaislachkogel ( 3058  m above sea level ) and the Tiefenbachkogel ( 3250  m above sea level ) Main mountains of Sölden.

The glacier stretches from the Innere Schwarzen Schneid, or the Rettenbachjoch to the north of it ( 2990  m , the Pitztal crossing), northeast down to an altitude of about 2680 meters above sea level. The glacier reaches a length of about two kilometers and a width of about one kilometer. As with the vast majority of Austrian glaciers, its length has been declining for several years; in 2014/15 the decrease was 29.2 m.

climate

Like almost all Alpine glaciers, the Rettenbachferner is also affected by the consequences of the climate crisis. The global warming makes for a substantial glacial melt. Over time, the glacier slope becomes steadily steeper from year to year. For example, when he arrived in Sölden in 2018, the American ski professional Ted Ligety described the mountains, which are now largely free of glaciers, as a “lunar landscape”.

Development

The scattered houses in the ski area around the glacier form the Rettenbachferner district of the municipality of Sölden .

In winter, the ski area can be reached by cable cars and all year round by car via the Ötztaler Gletscherstraße from Sölden and is partially accessible for skiing across the entire altitude (up to around 3250  m ). The foothills reach down to about 2675  m . In 1998 the Hochsölden ski area was connected to the Rettenbach glacier.

Every year in autumn, the Alpine Ski World Cup season opens on the Rettenbachferner with one giant slalom for women and one for men . Also bike tours regularly for Rettenbachferner (Oetztal Radtrophy) . In 2005 and 2007 it was a stage destination of the Germany tour of the professional cyclists.

Furthermore, the glacier also serves as a location for open-air theaters and numerous other tourist events in the Sölden / Hochsölden holiday region.

history

A cable car accident occurred on the Rettenbach Glacier on September 5, 2005, in which nine people were killed by a concrete bucket falling from a helicopter flying overhead.

Alpine Ski World Cup

In October 1993 the first World Cup giant slaloms were held on the Rettenbachferner. Since the 2000/01 season , the start of the Alpine Ski World Cup has taken place annually on the Rettenbach Glacier, see Alpine Ski World Cup in Sölden .
