The Alpine Ski World Cup races were first held on the Rettenbachferner in Sölden at the beginning of the 1993/94 season. From the 1996/97 season these giant slaloms for women and men took place every two years, and since the 2000/01 season they have been the prelude to the World Cup winter every year at the end of October. The start is at 3,048 meters and the finish at 2,680 meters. The route has a length of 1170 meters with a height difference of 368 meters. In 2002 there was a premiere in the Alpine Ski World Cup in Sölden: Thanks to the Norwegian Andrine Flemmen , the Austrian Nicole Hosp and the Slovenian Tina Maze , there were three simultaneous winners in a World Cup race for the first time. In 2006 the Sölden World Cup races had to be canceled for the first time because the weather was too warm, and in 2010 the men's race was canceled before the second round due to heavy fog. The record winners on the Rettenbachferner are Tina Maze with three wins (2002, 2005 and 2012) in the women and Ted Ligety ( USA ) with four wins (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015) in the men.
