Daniel Albrecht (born May 25, 1983 in Fiesch ) is a former Swiss ski racer .

biography

At the Junior World Championships in 2003 in Serre Chevalier , he was three times world champion in downhill , giant slalom and combined . He also finished second in the slalom behind his compatriot Marc Berthod . Shortly before the Junior World Championship, Albrecht had contested his first race in the World Cup . The Swiss Sports Aid Foundation honored Albrecht as the young athlete of the year 2003.

Albrecht took part in the World Cup in 2003 , 2005 and 2007 . In 2007 he became world champion in the super combined, vice world champion in giant slalom and third in the team competition with the Swiss team . His best ever World Cup result was in Bormio in 2005 when he finished seventh in the combined. At the 2006 Winter Olympics , he only missed the bronze medal in the combination by six hundredths of a second.

On November 29, 2007 Albrecht celebrated his first victory in the World Cup at the super combined in Beaver Creek , and only three days later he also won the giant slalom in Beaver Creek.

At the giant slalom in Adelboden , Albrecht came second behind his compatriot Marc Berthod. He secured another place on the podium at the season finale in Bormio, where he finished second in the slalom. He finished the 2007/08 World Cup season in seventh place in the overall World Cup. He started the 2008/09 season with a victory at the giant slalom in Sölden . His next victory in Alta Badia on December 21, 2008 meant the Swiss men's first success in this traditional race since Michael von Grünigen ten years ago (December 20, 1998).

During the final training for the downhill run from Kitzbühel on January 22nd, 2009, Albrecht fell so badly after the target jump that he suffered a traumatic brain injury and lost consciousness. After initial care in the nearest hospital, he was transferred to the Innsbruck University Clinic . After three weeks, he woke up on 12 February from a coma and was for rehabilitation to the University Hospital moved Bern. He was released on April 29, 2009, after which he immediately started a project to help people with brain injuries. In July 2009 Albrecht began preparing for the 2009/10 World Cup season , but he did not start any races and announced on January 21, 2010 in Kitzbühel that he would not make a comeback this winter.

On December 5th, 2010, more than 22 months after his serious injury, Daniel Albrecht again competed in a World Cup race and achieved 21st place in the giant slalom at Beaver Creek . The return to the World Cup turned out to be difficult, however, after the comeback race he achieved hardly any countable results in the next two years. On November 22, 2012, Albrecht fell during training for the World Cup downhill run in Lake Louise , where he suffered a dislocation of the kneecap and a tear in the inner ligament in his left knee.

On October 6, 2013 Daniel Albrecht announced his resignation. He drove a total of 138 World Cup races.
