Karl Schranz (born November 18, 1938 in St. Anton am Arlberg , Tyrol ) is one of the most successful and well-known former ski racers in Austria . He became world champion three times , won the overall World Cup twice and the discipline World Cup twice in downhill and once in giant slalom .

biography

Having grown up in St. Anton am Arlberg , one of the most famous ski regions in Austria, Karl Schranz started skiing very early. According to the wish of his father, a railway worker, he should learn a "bourgeois" job, but he finally prevailed and drove numerous championship races in his youth. His younger brother Helmut also became a ski racer.

Lauberhorn 1966

Schranz celebrated his first major victories in the winter of 1957 by winning the downhill and the combination at the Arlberg-Kandahar races in Chamonix . By the time the World Cup was introduced in winter 1967, he had won four more downhill runs, three combinations and one slalom at the Arlberg-Kandahar races, in addition to numerous other competitions. On the Lauberhorn in Wengen he won the downhill three times and the combination twice, and he was also victorious twice on the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel . Schranz celebrated a total of twelve victories in the World Cup, including two more victories each in Wengen and Kitzbühel. In 1969 and 1970 he was overall World Cup winner, in the same years he also won the Downhill World Cup and in 1969 the Giant Slalom World Cup.

Despite the successes already achieved in 1957 (especially the victories in the Kandahar race), he was not nominated for the 1958 World Championships, which was partly due to the fact that only six runners could be named per nation.
Schranz became world champion in downhill and combined at the 1962 World Championships in Chamonix, France. Eight years later he won his third title in giant slalom at the 1970 World Championships in Val Gardena . He also won a bronze medal in giant slalom at the 1966 World Championships . A possible further medal in the combination (he was second in the intermediate classification behind Jean-Claude Killy ) was awarded in the final slalom on August 14, when he was disqualified in the first run. A good month earlier, he had suffered a ligament injury in his right shoulder joint in a fall during giant slalom training on the Stelvio Pass and had to wear a light cast for about a week.

From 1958 to 1968, Schranz won eleven Austrian championship titles , with his first in 1958 in Bad Hofgastein , where he won on February 28 in the downhill ex aequo with Josef Rieder , then on March 1 in the giant slalom - and on March 2 as Slalom second (also here an ex aequo placement with Toni Mark ) - the combination score brought - and this actually as a "Junior" (whereby he even became a four-time champion in this regard). In 1966, 1969 and 1970 he was awarded the Skieur d'Or by the International Association of Ski Journalists (AIJS) .

Little luck at the Olympics

Despite his success at the World Ski Championships, he failed to win the Olympic Games. When he first took part in 1960 in Squaw Valley , he started injured. In 1964 in Innsbruck , despite the flu, he achieved a silver medal. In 1968 in Grenoble he was first in the final slalom ahead of Frenchman Jean-Claude Killy, but was subsequently disqualified. In the second run of the slalom, which took place in thick fog, Schranz stopped the run because a piste supervisor was on the route. He was allowed to repeat the run and achieved the best time. Then it was said that "Schranz's stop and the slope workers were irrelevant because Schranz had already made a goal error". The run repetition was therefore not to be granted. However, Schranz also justified the goal error with the distraction caused by the slope workers. After long deliberations by the jury, Schranz was eliminated from the ranking with a vote of 3:2. The fact that Killy won his third Olympic gold as a result raised all sorts of assumptions in Austria, and there were verbal gaffes in both the Austrian and French media. The joy in Austria over Herbert Huber 's silver medal and Alfred Matt 's bronze medal in the relevant slalom was completely lost in the bickering over the Schranz disqualification. With regard to the jury deliberations, it should be noted that the British jury member proposed that both Schranz and Killy be awarded a gold medal, which, however, was not possible due to the regulations.

There were a number of subsequent admissions, which found wide coverage in the Austrian press, but did not change anything.

Just before the start of the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , Schranz was expelled by IOC President Avery Brundage for violating the amateur law of the time . A photo leaked to the IOC showing Schranz in a jersey with a coffee advertisement was official evidence for Brundage that Schranz was “not an amateur”; Schranz once wore this “corpus delicti” (probably in the summer of 1971) to a charity football game. The decision struck national pride, and a wave of indignation erupted. The Minister of Education at the time , Fred Sinowatz , recommended a boycott and asked other nations to do the same, which Schranz himself did not want. Anti-Brundage and pro-Schranz stickers circulated in Vienna, which were even worn at the conservative Jägerball . Georg Danzer and André Heller published as Die Österreicher i. V. the anthemic countryman Der Karli soll leb'n ("... the Brundage stands next to it. [stands next to him] We don't give a damn about Olympic gold. We don't like it, who rolls us. [teases, fools, annoys] [... ] He shines like that, Karli Schranz, he's a hero for young and old.) 5,000 copies were sold and it reached number 9 in the Austro charts. When Schranz arrived in Vienna-Schwechat from Tokyo on February 8, 7,500 fans were already waiting, including the ÖVP leadership. A total of 87,000 people are said to have followed the drive to Ballhausplatz , with Schranz leaning out of the sunroof of Sinowatz's (SPÖ) service car and shaking hands. Then he followed the invitation of then Chancellor Bruno Kreisky (SPÖ) to the Chancellery, where he greeted the crowd three times from the balcony.

Sports Gala Night 2008

Schranz ended his active skiing career after being excluded; He was also a bit bitter because a promise apparently made by the then President of the International Ski Federation , Marc Hodler , to organize their own world championships as compensation, was not kept. Since then he has lived with his family in St. Anton am Arlberg and is the owner of the Hotel Karl Schranz , but is still connected to skiing.

movie double

In 1969 he doubled Robert Redford in the film "Downhill Racer" (German title: "Schussfahrt"), with the film hero winning race after race.

After career

Around 1988 he was presented with an Olympic Medal of Honor by IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch at a solemn ceremony in Vienna , which amounted to a certain belated apology from the IOC. Already at the Olympic Games in Calgary there was a conversation between him and Samaranch for the first time, which Schranz had been looking for with the IOC President for a long time. In a sense, Schranz is also considered a pioneer in changing various amateur rules.

As a member of the Arlberg Ski Club , he made a significant contribution to the fact that the Alpine World Ski Championships took place in St. Anton am Arlberg in 2001 .

Since meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Arlberg in 2001 , he has become one of Putin's closest and most influential advisers on the hosting of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics .
