Bruno Kernen (born July 1, 1972 in Thun ) is a former Swiss ski racer .
biography
In the Ski World Cup he won three downhill runs, including the Lauberhorn race in Wengen . His greatest success was winning the gold medal at the 1997 World Championships in Sestriere in downhill skiing. He also won the silver medal in combination at this world championship. In 2003, Kernen won the bronze medal in downhill skiing at the World Championships in St. Moritz . At the 2006 Winter Olympics , he won the bronze medal in the downhill. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre , Kernen won the bronze medal in the Super-G.
Since he has a distant cousin as his namesake, who was also a Swiss ski racer ( Bruno Kernen ), he was referred to as "Bruno Kernen II" on TV ads at the World Championships.
On July 6, 2007, Kernen announced his retirement from top-class sport in the start house of the Lauberhorn run. The reason he gave was the knee injury that he sustained three months earlier after falling down on the downhill in Lenzerheide .
He is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right To Play .
