The specialist for fast routes has won 24 world cup races in its career , including 19 downhill runs and, based on victories, is the second most successful downhill skier in history behind Franz Klammer (25 downhill victories ). In 1979 and 1980 he won the small crystal ball for victory in the Downhill World Cup .
A fall on the Lauberhorn downhill run on January 24, 1981, during which he suffered a shoulder injury and had to take a break from racing (he missed the Kandahar downhill run in St. Anton am Arlberg ), was likely to cost him his say about the “little crystal ball” He might not have been able to make a comeback for the remaining two races in Aspen (March 5th / 6th, 1981) with the ranks 4 and 5, which were only discarded results .
