The 29th Alpine World Ski Championships took place from January 27 to February 8, 1987 in the winter sports resort of Crans-Montana in Switzerland . For the first time, Super G competitions were held at a world championship (this was the decision taken by the 35th FIS Congress in Vancouver in May 1985 ).

Awarded to Crans-Montana

At the 34th FIS Congress in Sydney in May 1983 , Crans-Montana was entrusted with organizing these world championships.

Budget overrun, conservation movement

In the run-up to the event, the budget was noticeably exceeded (CHF 17 million instead of CHF 10 million). In addition, there were objections from nature conservationists, to which the organizing committee replied with commitments for afforestation and greening of the soil.

Worth mentioning

  • The world championships turned out to be a great triumph for the host Swiss. With the exception of the combination and the men's slalom, all gold medals went to Switzerland. There was a specialty in the men's downhill with a quadruple victory, the first in the men's race since 1931 in Mürren (when the first four places had also gone to Switzerland).
Thus, the runners of the Swiss Ski Association succeeded in post-war history what those from Austria had already achieved in 1962 and from France in 1966, among other things. to win almost all gold medals (and several others) to be awarded.
  • It was only possible to defend the title in the women's combination, whereby the winner Erika Hess was able to win this title three times in a row.
In addition, there was the same podium in the women's combination as in 1985.
  • As in 1985, Austria was again without a gold medal and was even overtaken by Germany.
