Dietmar Köhlbichler (born September 13, 1963 in Breitenwang ) is a former Austrian ski racer . The slalom specialist was the overall winner of the European Cup in 1984 and achieved two podium places in the World Cup .

biography

Köhlbichler was accepted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Association in the early 1980s and competed in his first World Cup races in the winter of 1982/83 , where he initially remained without winning points. He had great success in the European Cup in the 1983/84 season . With two victories each in slalom and in the combination, he was able to win both these discipline ratings and the overall rating.

In the winter of 1984/85 Köhlbichler got his first World Cup points with 15th place in the slaloms of Madonna di Campiglio and Kranjska Gora . At the beginning of the 1985/86 season he finished fifth in Sestriere and in January he achieved his first podium in Kitzbühel when he was third at the same time as Andreas Wenzel from Liechtenstein . With another two top ten results, he reached tenth place in the Slalom World Cup. At the end of the season he was able to score for the first and only time in this discipline with tenth place in the first giant slalom in Lake Placid .

On January 18, 1987, the Tyrolean achieved his best World Cup result when he finished second behind the Swiss Joël Gaspoz in the Wengen slalom . Overall, he came in the 1986/87 season four times in the top ten and finished seventh in the Slalom World Cup. At the 1987 World Cup in Crans-Montana , however, he had no success. After finishing 17th in the first run, he dropped out in the second run.

In the following season, Köhlbichler was among the top ten three times, his best result was sixth place in the Lienz slalom . However, this meant that he could not qualify for the 1988 Winter Olympics within the Austrian team . Despite the Austrian slalom champion title, Köhlbichler ended his World Cup career after the winter and he switched to professional races. Because of a knee injury, he had to end his career entirely.

After his active career, Köhlbichler trained as a qualified alpine ski trainer and was a trainer at SC Pfronten. In 2000 he co-founded the Head ski base alongside the German Peter Eigler , where he now works as a trainer.

Today Köhlbichler lives in the Bad Kissinger Hütte as a hut host in summer . In winter, when the hut is not served, he gives ski lessons for children in a ski school in Tannheim (Tyrol) .
