The Turgi station was opened on September 29, 1856 together with the Baden – Brugg railway line by the Swiss Northeast Railway . It is located in the municipality of Turgi . Since the opening of the Turgi – Koblenz – Waldshut railway on August 18, 1859, it has been a branch station that was shaped like an island station for 135 years .

history

On the occasion of the opening of the line to Brugg, only a temporary station building was initially built. On the one hand, the company wanted to clarify the potential of the station, on the other hand, the route to Koblenz was already being planned at that time.

With the opening of the Turgi – Koblenz – Waldshut railway line , the station was converted from a simple country station to a transfer station. The tracks were laid in the direction of Koblenz – Waldshut north of the newly built station building. The station also received a station buffet with separate second and third class. The station received 1911 signal box of the type Bruchsal . This had a central clearance system operated by the board and two raised control panels. This mechanical interlocking in 1996 against an electronic interlocking of the type Simis C replaced. Initially it was remote-controlled from Brugg , later from Zurich-Altstetten and today from the operations center east at Zurich Airport .

The station was converted into a branch station between 1994 and 1997, whereby the newly built round station building was only subsequently moved to its current location.

investment

new circular station building

In its heyday, the station had nine station tracks side by side. There was also a double-track locomotive shed , two wagons with three tracks each, two goods sheds and a turntable .

Today's station has four station tracks with a platform edge; Track 1 and 4 each have an outside platform , tracks 2 and 3 have a common central platform . The platforms are connected to one another by means of underpasses via stairs and ramps . While all four tracks can be entered from Brugg, access to and from Koblenz is only possible via the three northern tracks 1, 2 and 3. To the west of the platform tracks there are several sidings that are used by the construction service. There are no sidings and there is no more freight traffic today .

Old station building and steam locomotive monument

former island train station Turgi

The old station building was built according to a design by Jakob Friedrich Wanner , who was also the site manager. His design was based heavily on the building of the Aarau train station, which was built at the same time , but was smaller. The building consisted of two two-story end structures, which were two window axes wide and four window axes deep, and were connected with a one-story central building. Between 1995 and 1996 the listed (TUR913) building was demolished.

The listed steam locomotive “Molly” (TUR926), installed in 1967, also had to make way for the new building. The “monument locomotive” built in 1944 was given to the “ Schinznacher Baumschulbahn ” association in 1994 , where it was revised and put back into operation in 1999.

New station building

The round station building (it is the only station building with a round shape on the SBB ) was built north of the existing tracks in 1995 and moved south to its current location in 1997. Due to falling demand, the SBB counter was closed on July 1, 2018.
