Untersiggenthal ( Swiss German : ˈʊndərsɪɡəˌtɑːl, ˈʊndərsɪɡiˌtɑːl ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Baden district and is located around three kilometers northwest of the district capital in the lower Limmat Valley .

geography

Aerial view (1953)

The community is located in the gravel plain east of Switzerland's moated castle , the confluence of the Aare , Limmat and Reuss rivers . The two historical districts of Untersiggingen (in the west) and Obersiggingen (in the east) that have grown together are located on a prominent stepped terrain that slopes down towards the Limmat. The new quarters Ennetturgi and Wasserfallen have developed in the river loops on the northern bank of the Limmat. In the north, the Siggenberg forms a natural boundary. This elevation, which belongs to the Tabular Jura, forms an extensive plateau, which at its western end, at the Iberig , drops steeply and suddenly into the Aare valley. In the north-western corner of the municipality, around two kilometers from the center, in the Aare valley is the village of Siggenthal-Station, which arose around the local train station.

The area of the municipality is 828 hectares , of which 357 hectares are forested and 199 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 590 meters on the Siggenberg, the lowest at 325 meters on the Aare. Neighboring communities are Würenlingen in the north, Obersiggenthal in the east, Turgi and Gibstorf in the south and Brugg and Villigen in the west.

history

Blankette from a loan from the community of Untersiggenthal dated December 31, 1921

The Untersiggenthal area was already populated during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. This is the result of excavations at the “Heidenküche” on the Siggenberg in the “Bürgle” area in April 1937. Sickinga was first mentioned in a document in 833. The place name comes from the Old High German Sikkingun and means "among the people of Sikko". Landowners in the Middle Ages were the Fridolinsstift in Säckingen (since the 9th century), the Einsiedeln monastery (since the early 11th century), the Sankt Blasien monastery (since the 12th century), the Wettingen monastery (since 1245) and the monastery Königsfelden in Windisch (since 1337).

The rulers and owners of blood jurisdiction were the Counts of Kyburg , and from 1273 the Habsburgs . Around 1250 a bridge was built across the Aare in Freudenau across from Stilli . For their protection, the Kyburgers had Freudenau Castle built. Looting Zurich troops destroyed a large part of the complex during a military campaign in 1351. Other parts fell victim to a major fire shortly after 1400, the remaining buildings were abandoned and fell into disrepair over the centuries.

In 1415 the Swiss conquered Aargau and Siggenthal was now part of the Siggenamt in the county of Baden , a common rule . In 1504 the lower jurisdiction passed to the governor . After lengthy disputes, the Siggenamt was divided in 1695 when Kirchdorf and Nussbaumen formed the separate municipality of Obersiggenthal . In March 1798 the French took Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Untersiggenthal was initially a municipality in the short-lived canton of Baden . In 1799 the troops of Marshal André Masséna laid part of Untersiggingen in rubble and ashes. The community has belonged to the canton of Aargau since 1803.

From August 18, 1859, the railway line to Waldshut ran through the municipality of Untersiggenthal. However, the Turgi station , which had opened three years earlier, was much closer to most residents. After numerous residents had previously found work in the Turgi factories, the Stroppel twisting mill was the first factory on Untersiggenthaler Boden (production until 1990). Since 1900 the number of inhabitants has increased by more than six times and Untersiggenthal developed into part of the Baden agglomeration .
