Würenlos ( Swiss German : ˈʋʏrəˌloːs ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Baden district and lies north of the Limmat in the Furttal , on the border with the canton of Zurich .

geography

The village is located at the lower end of the flat Furt valley south of the Gmeumeriwald hill ( 516  m above sea level ) and west of the Bick hill ( 562  m above sea level ) at the end of the Altberg . Towards the south the terrain slopes steeply towards the Limmat . The Furtbach forms a deeply cut ravine before flowing into the Limmat southwest of the village. North of the Gmeumeriwald, the municipality ends in front of the Greppe, a foothill of the Lägern belonging to the Folded Jura . To the east of the village center are the once independent hamlets of Kempfhof and Oetlikon on the Furtbach ; today Kempfhof has grown together with the main settlement. The Aargau exclave of Fahr Monastery, enclosed by the municipality of Unterengstringen (Canton Zurich) , has belonged to the municipality of Würenlos since January 1, 2008.

The area of the municipality is 903 hectares , of which 304 hectares are forested and 219 hectares are built over. The highest point is the summit of Bicks at 562 meters, the lowest is on the Limmat at 385 meters. Neighboring communities are Wettingen in the west and north, Otelfingen in the northeast, Hüttikon in the east, Oetwil an der Limmat in the southeast, Spreitenbach and Killwangen in the south and Neuenhof in the southwest.

history

Various finds indicate that the Würenlos area was already populated during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. The Roman road from Vindonissa ( Windisch ) via Vitudurum ( Oberwinterthur ) to Brigantium ( Bregenz ) led through what was later to become the municipality. The Romans exploited a quarry with Mägenwil shell limestone here; In addition to the remains of grooves, there are also circular depressions for the extraction of millstones. When the Romans withdrew at the beginning of the 5th century, the Alamanni gradually settled .

Wirchilleozha was first mentioned in a document in 870 in a deed of donation from the landlord Landeloh. This old high German place name means "in the landless of the workers", which indicates that the Alemanni also exploited the quarry. In the Middle Ages, the small communities Kempfhof and Oetlikon emerged. The sovereignty and the jurisdiction of blood were initially with the Counts of Kyburg , from 1273 with the Habsburgs . The lower jurisdiction was owned by the Barons von Steinbrunn from Alsace until 1344 and then passed to the Wettingen monastery , which from 1421 was also the largest landowner.

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Würenlos was now part of the Wettingen office in the county of Baden , a common rule . In 1528, at the time of the Reformation , a minority of the village population professed the new denomination. Catholics and Protestants used the same church for a little over 400 years until they each moved into their own church in 1937. Denominationally separate schools existed until 1896.

In March 1798 the French took Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Würenlos was initially a municipality in the short-lived canton of Baden , since 1803 it has belonged to the canton of Aargau. The opening of the national railway from Wettingen to Winterthur took place on October 15, 1877. As a competitor, the so-called Bülach-Baden Railway was opened on October 1 of the same year and was shut down on January 18, 1937.

In 1900, under pressure from the cantonal government, the small neighboring communities of Kempfhof and Oetlikon merged with Würenlos. During the 20th century, Würenlos changed more and more into a residential community for people who no longer worked in agriculture but in industry. At first it was mainly employees of the BBC in Baden, later the village came into the catchment area of the agglomeration of Zurich and the extensive industrial areas in the Limmat Valley .

From 1803 the Fahr Monastery , an exclave in the Zurich canton, was administratively assigned to the municipality of Würenlos. The community provided, among other things, residents' registration and fire inspection. In 2005, the cantonal government announced that it would also assign the area of the monastery to the municipality, as the current state of the cantonal constitution contradicted it. Since January 1st, 2008 the Fahr Monastery has been an integral part of the Würenlos community.
