The Swiss Northeast Railway between Zurich and Baden was opened in 1847 as the first Swiss railway line. The route at that time ran between Neuenhof and Baden along the left bank of the Limmat , so that Wettingen initially had no rail connection. This route was changed in 1875 with the construction of the Neuenhof-Wettingen railway bridge and the Wettingen-Baden railway bridge in 1877 , and in 1876 the Wettinger train station, located between the former monastery and the village, was opened.

The station became more important when in 1877 the Swiss National Railway (SNB) opened the railway lines Winterthur – Wettingen and Zofingen – Wettingen and the Swiss Northeast Railway opened the line from Baden to Bülach . Wettingen train station was electrified between 1907 and 1909. Between Seebach and Wettingen was the proposal from the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon of trial operation Seebach-Wettingen been created, the international attention was triggered and the electrification of the Swiss rail network. The station was expanded in 1912 and the track system in 1919. In 1942 the station was again provided with overhead lines. Major renovations were carried out in 1982. From October 2011 to June 2013, the track systems of the station were modernized and the entrances to the platforms were rebuilt so that there were no stairs. The opening ceremony of the redesigned station took place on June 21st.

The original station facility from 1876 included the reception building, a goods shed, the signal box, a turntable and shed. In 1982 the reception building was rebuilt, an auxiliary building was rebuilt and the signal box was demolished. Despite the demolition, Wettingen station is one of the best-preserved station ensembles in the canton of Aargau. For this reason, it is considered worthy of preservation and is classified as an important cultural object by the Aargau Monument Preservation. Today the station has five platforms with platform edges. Tracks 3, 4 and 5 are used for lines 6 and 12 of the Zurich S-Bahn , tracks 1 and 2 for regional traffic . There are also several tracks for freight traffic.
