District School

A district school is a type of school that can be completed in some cantons of Switzerland , for example Aargau or Solothurn , after six years of attending primary school .

Kanton Aargau

The district school, also known as the Progymnasium or Untergymnasium , is the school with the highest level of performance in the canton of Aargau . In other cantons, this function is assumed by the secondary school or the cantonal school (lower secondary school). Since 2014, the three-year district schooling has lasted from the 7th to the 9th school year, before that it lasted four years, from the 6th to the 9th school year.

  • The main subjects are German and mathematics. Further compulsory subjects are: French, English, geography, history, biology, chemistry, physics, movement and sport, visual design, music, as well as ethics and religion.
  • In addition to specializing in the compulsory subjects mentioned above, there is a wide range of optional subjects: instrumental lessons, textile works, works, choral singing, Italian, Latin, French (internship), practical subjects internship, geometric-technical drawing, housekeeping and free design. Greek has been removed from the curriculum by the canton from the 2004/05 school year.

Final exam :

In the canton of Aargau, a final examination (AP) was taken at public district schools at the end of the 3rd class district school (9th school year) until 2016. The final examination was considered passed if an average grade of at least 4.0 was achieved. In 2017 the final exams were abolished.

Tests were carried out in German, French (written and oral) and mathematics. In addition, the suggested grades for the entire last school year in German, French, mathematics, English, history, chemistry, biology, plus the mean value from music and drawing, counted for the conclusion.

Canton of Solothurn

In the canton of Solothurn , the former district school, unlike in Aargau, was not the highest level, but was intended for pupils who had good grades in primary school but could not or did not want to go to canton school ( grammar school ). It was basically intended for more demanding apprenticeships. But there are also “special trains”, the subject of which was more geared towards transferring to a cantonal school or a higher school. After two years you had to have an average of at least 5 in the doctoral subjects in order to be accepted into the cantonal school.

After a reform of the secondary Solothurn students attend since the school year 2011/2012, secondary school with the departments of P (sec P progymnasiale requirements), E (Sec E, expanded requirements), B (s B, basic requirements) and K (sec K , Small classes).
