Bridge restaurant

A bridge restaurant is a special type of restaurant and is located in a building that is built as a bridge .
As a motorway service station
The bridge restaurant is usually set up in such a way that it can be visited by resting road users from both sides of the motorway. The advantage of a bridge restaurant is that it is not necessary to maintain and manage a restaurant for each lane. In addition, the overbuilding of the motorway means that less space is required for the rest area. In addition, visitors can observe the ongoing traffic.
United States
The first bridge restaurant was built in Vinita , Oklahoma , in 1957 . The North Illinois Toll Highway, Chicago's bypass, was provided with five bridge restaurants during construction in 1958. In 1960 US Federal Law 23 (Highways) came into effect, which prohibited the commercial use of rest areas along the interstate highways . The rest areas that were already managed in 1960 were allowed to continue to operate. Because the unaffected turnpikes (state toll roads) already had rest stops, the spread of bridge restaurants was almost stopped. However, one more (Lincoln Oasis) was added in 1967, also in Illinois.
Italy
The Italian architect Angelo Bianchetti took over the concept and built Europe's first bridge restaurant in Fiorenzuola d'Arda in 1959 for the Pavesi service station chain . The spread of the bridge restaurants then ran at the same time as the expansion of the motorway network. The competitor Pavesis, Motta , followed in 1961 with the bridge service station in Cantagallo by architect Melchiorre Bega . Both bridges were supported by entrance buildings made of reinforced concrete , the bridges themselves were constructed as steel frame structures . In 1962, Pavesi replaced two existing rest stops along the A4 with bridge restaurants. These were built by Bianchetti as a reinforced concrete structure in Novara and Osio , now Brembo. In Italy , 14 of the 290 motorway service stations were ultimately built as bridge restaurants. In Alfaterna (Nocera Inferiore) there was even a motel on the 2nd floor of the bridge, but today there are only the entrance buildings on both sides of the motorway. The bridge in Alfaterna has been demolished and there are only 13 bridge restaurants in Italy today.
rest of Europe
In 1958, the first section of the M6 was opened in Great Britain . Motorway Services Area (MSA) were also planned for the further expansion . Many of these MSAs have a pedestrian bridge, but only five of the 91 MSAs have been designed as bridge restaurants. The M6 was equipped with three bridge restaurants. The never completed M2 London - Dover received a bridge restaurant at Farthing Corner, now Medway. Leicester Services opened in 1966 as the last bridge restaurant in Great Britain .
In Germany there are bridge restaurants on the A 1 near Holdorf ( Dammer Berge service station ) and on the A 9 near Rudolphstein ( Frankenwald service station ). The bridge rest houses in Germany, however, had higher construction costs than two individual rest stops. In addition, due to the length of the building, facilities such as toilets, kitchens and storage had to be provided twice, so that no further bridge restaurants were built in Germany due to the high costs.
Bridge restaurants are widespread in Belgium. At the beginning of the 1970s, the first bridge restaurants were opened in France, by Jacques Borel, and Switzerland.
In Switzerland there are bridge restaurants z. B. at Würenlos on the A1 . On closer inspection, the Pratteln motorway service station is not a bridge restaurant in the narrower sense, because the actual bridge is used by shops and the restaurants are located in the two ends of the bridge. The Netherlands did not follow until 1980 and in Scandinavia bridge restaurants were not operated until 1986.
More bridge restaurants
According to their own statement, Austria is currently the smallest bridge restaurant in the world. In the old town of Kufstein, the transition bridge between the inn and the Hotel des Auracher Löchls was quickly converted into a bridge restaurant for two people.
During trade fairs and major events, there is a cafeteria in the bridge that connects the ICC Berlin with the exhibition center . The guest has a view of the Messedamm underneath through angled windows.
The house at the end of the German Wine Route also houses a bridge restaurant (see House of the German Wine Route ).
In the literal sense, the tower restaurant on the pylon of the New Danube Bridge in Bratislava , Slovakia , can also be called the bridge restaurant.
