The Autostrada A11 ( Italian for 'Motorway A11'), also known as Autostrada Firenze-Mare , is an Italian motorway in the middle of the country that connects Florence with Pisa and the Ligurian Sea . It is 81.2 km long and tolls for its entire length . The motorway is entirely in Tuscany . The motorway is operated by the Italian company Autostrade per l'Italia .

The route is part of the European route 76 .

The A11 at Prato

The entire route of the A11 has been expanded to four lanes.

The motorway starts near Florence Airport , where it first crosses with the A1 going east . Then it leads along the plain of the Arno River , past the cities of Prato and Pistoia , to Lucca . Here the A11 / A12 leads to Viareggio on the A12 .

The motorway ends after 80 kilometers north of Pisa , where it joins the A12.

Development status and future plans

The A11 is currently expanded to four lanes continuously from Florence to Pisa.

As part of the 2008 agreement between the operating company Autostrade per l'Italia and ANAS , which envisages numerous investments in the existing motorway network in Italy, modernization work was also decided on the A11. Between Florence and Pistoia, the motorway is to be expanded to six lanes to 26.8 km (three lanes in each direction), as well as 11.4 km between Pistoia and Montecatini . These projects are currently in the planning phase.

history

The A11 is the second oldest Italian motorway after the A8 . It was built in its full length in the early 1930s under fascist leadership .

The construction time was four years and lasted from 1928 to 1932. On August 8, 1933, the entire route was opened to traffic.

Origin of name

In addition to the official name A11 , the motorway also received another name, Autostrada Firenze-Mare . The route connects Florence directly with the sea and the beaches of Tuscany. This is why the A11 is better known by this name among Florentines.
