  • The Raccordo autostradale 16 ( Italian for 'motorway feeder 16') is a motorway feeder in north-east Italy , which connects the Italian motorway A28 with the Strada Statale 13 Pontebbana and the city of Pordenone . It is only 3.754 km long and lies entirely in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia .

The motorway slip road is managed by Friuli Venezia Giulia Strade SpA (FVG Strade for short), which manages the regional road network in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The route has four lanes (2 lanes in each direction), but no hard shoulder . The road itself is not classified as a motorway, but as a strada extraurbana principale (comparable to an expressway ). These are usually not subject to tolls.

To the north it continues as SR 177 28 km to Sequals.

    Transition to SR 177

Current plans envisage extending the motorway slip road as a new motorway 58 km north to Sequals and then east to Gemona del Friuli on the A23 motorway . The aim is to create a connection between the A23 and A28 motorways and also to reduce travel time between Gemona and Pordenone, as Udine is bypassed to the north.

This project is financed by private investors such as the Italian motorway company Autovie Venete , Impregilo and Rizzani de Eccher . The estimated cost is 800 million euros , which, together with a 55 year long concession and the resulting revenue, are to be financed through tolls.

The planned motorway can be divided into two sections:

    • The section between the current end of the motorway slip road and Sequals. There is already a two-lane expansion in the form of the SR 177, which is to be expanded to make it suitable for the motorway.
    • The section from Sequals to Gemona does not yet exist. The new construction of the route will be much more complicated here, as you have to go through hilly areas and therefore many engineering structures will be necessary.

The tender expired in February 2011, but was originally supposed to be completed by the end of 2010. At the beginning of 2011 it became known that the planned route would not be expanded as a motorway, but only as an expressway ( Superstrada ).

On March 15, 2011, a new selection process was opened. There are two applicants in total, Condotte SpA, which among other things finances the Messina Bridge , and SIS-Sacyr, which is building the Pedemontana Veneta motorway between Vicenza and Spresiano ( Treviso province ). The review of both offers by the Friuli Venezia Giulia authorities will take a few months.

The affected communities along the planned route are resisting the expansion plans. A newly founded committee, ARCA (Assieme Resistiamo Contro l'Autostrada) - la Pedemontana rivive (German: Together against the motorway - living at the foot of the Alps ) collected 200 signatures against the planned motorway within two weeks.

At the beginning of 2012, ARCA collected another 3,870 signatures against the construction of the motorway. The signatures have been sent to the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region Transport Department. The main criticisms of ARCA are that the construction of the motorway will destroy the special landscape in northern Friuli and the creation of a new transit route between Veneto and Austria .

The protests against the project continue in 2012, while the opponents of the motorway continue to point to the destruction of the environment along the Tagliamento and the increase in fine dust pollution from the additional vehicles and question the benefits for local businesses and the local economy , the responsible minister of the regional government has announced that construction work will start soon in 2013.
