Impregilo is an Italian construction company with headquarters in Sesto San Giovanni near Milan . The company was founded in 1959.
Today's company is a result of the merger of the Italian building contractors Cogefar-Impresit SpA , Girola SpA and Lodigiani SpA in 1990. Around 10,000 employees work in the company (as of 2006).

The company is currently building the Kárahnjúkar hydropower project in Iceland , which is due to be completed in 2009, and the Faido and Bodio lots of the Gotthard base tunnel , which is due to be completed in 2015.
Suspicion of fraud and responsibility in the garbage crisis in Campania
Impregilo is currently suspected of fraud in connection with a public contract to build a waste incineration plant in the Campanian city of Acerra .
Impregilo has been responsible for building such a plant in Acerra since 1998. The company stated a construction time of 300 days for its project in 2000. The waste incineration plant is still not operational eight years later. The public prosecutor's office opened a fraud investigation in 2003, which in 2004 led to the temporary confiscation of the entire facility under construction. In 2005 the public contract won by Impregilo was annulled and dissolved. In June 2007 the public prosecutor confiscated 750 million euros from the construction consortium led by Impregilo. On February 29, 2008, the public prosecutor brought charges of abuse of office and fraudulent activities in the awarding and execution of public contracts against 27 people, including the President of the Campania Region and former Special Commissioner for Management of the Garbage Crisis Antonio Bassolino and several former top managers of Impregilo. Impregilo SpA as a legal person and several of its subsidiaries are also charged. The trial is scheduled to begin on May 14, 2008. Acerra's incinerator, which was never finished, is one of the main causes of the waste crisis in Naples that has been going on for 15 years.
