Gemona del Friuli ( Friulian Glemone , Slovenian humic , German Klemaun ) is an Italian municipality with 10,778 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

geography

Gemona del Friuli lies on the course of the Tagliamento , north of Udine and at the southern exit of the Canal Valley . The place spreads out at the foot of the Monte Chiampon massif .

history

In the Middle Ages, Gemona was an independent commune under the rule of the Patriarch of Aquileia . It has belonged to Venice since 1420 .

On May 6, 1976, Friuli , located in an earthquake prone area, was hit by a major earthquake , the epicenter of which was near Gemona. It reached a value of 6.5 on the Richter scale and 965 people died. Gemona and the neighboring communities of Venzone and Osoppo were badly destroyed. The right aisle and the campanile of the famous cathedral Santa Maria Assunta (Holy Mary Assumption) collapsed. In the meantime everything has been rebuilt as well as possible, including the campanile (bell tower). In the cathedral since standing earthquake the columns wrong something.

On the facade are remarkable Romanesque sculptures by Giovanni Bono from Bissone . To the right of the portal the oversized Christophorus .
