Rudolfsbahn to Villach

The Pontafelbahn , in Italian Pontebbana , is an almost 89 kilometers long, double-track electrified railway line between Udine and Tarvisio in the course of the railway connection from Venice to Villach . It crosses the southern Alps in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia . In the 4-kilometer section from Udine to PM Vat , the line has so far only been single-track.

A new line with a completely new route and a top speed of 180 km / h has been in operation since November 2000. From Udine to Carnia , the railway line largely follows the route that existed until 1995, while the line from Carnia to Tarvisio was completely re-routed. Only in the Pontebba station, in the area of the Ugovizza Valbruna station and at the state border with Austria at Thörl-Maglern do new and old lines meet. At a distance of 49.1 km there are 40.6 km in tunnels between Carnia and Tarvisio. Long-distance trains traveling through the new line from Udine station to Tarvisio Boscoverde station only need around 45 minutes with good route conditions, while the journey time over the old line was around 100 minutes.

history

planning

As early as the 1860s, there were considerations to build a further railway line following the Rudolfsbahn from Villach to Trieste in addition to the existing southern line via Marburg an der Drau (today Maribor ) and Laibach . There were two routes to choose from: On the one hand, one over the Predilpass to Gorizia , where there was a connection to the existing network in the direction of Trieste and Udine. The second option was a route via Pontafel to Udine, also with a connection to the existing route via Gorizia to Trieste.

Construction and operation

Since large parts of Friuli and Veneto became Italian in 1866, only the variant via Predil to Gorizia was considered for Austria. However, this was never built. Later it was decided to establish a connection to the Italian network in Pontafel with a side branch as the Imperial and Royal State Railroad Tarvis – Pontafel . The 24.7 kilometer route was finally opened on October 11, 1879 for local and October 30, 1879 for international traffic. The rest of the route from Pontafel to Udine ran through small galleries and viaducts in the Fella Valley and was repeatedly hit by more severe natural events such as earthquakes . The operators could not agree on a community station in Pontafel (today Pontebba), so there were two stations for a long time, one in Pontafel itself and another in the Pontebba district.

The Pontafelbahn, officially opened in 1879, connects Trieste, Udine, Pontafel, Villach, Salzburg and Munich in a broader sense.

Accidents

On August 14, 1918, a serious occurred railway accident in the station of Uggowitz . Due to a wrongly set switch , two front holiday covers collided. 11 people died.

Planning the new line

Because the old route was often interrupted due to severe natural events and this was also hit by the strong earthquakes in 1976 and 1978, construction work on the new route began in the late 1970s. The route was opened in sections from south to north, with the last section from Ugovizza Valbruna to Tarvisio not being opened until November 26, 2000 together with the new station. The old border station Tarvisio Centrale has since been left to decay along with all the adjacent buildings.

Pontebbana-e-Fella Viaduct (August 2011)

The new line leads through eight longer tunnels. The Zuc dal Bor tunnel between Carnia and Pontebba is the longest with a length of around 9.2 kilometers. From Strada Statale 13 there are some entrances to the emergency exits of the tunnels. There are 16 longer valley crossings or bridges along the entire route; the Pontebbana-e-Fella Viaduct is the longest, it crosses the Fella River and is not far north of the Carnia train station.

Route of the new line

In Udine station, the Pontafelbahn leaves the station on the left and initially runs a single track to Posto Movimento Vat , which is named after the Udine Vat district. There are five level crossings along this section , which are also the only ones along the entire route. At the Posto Movimento Vat, the Udine bypass, which with a few exceptions is only used by freight trains, meets the Pontafelbahn. From there this is two-pronged. The section equipped with the RS4 Codici train protection begins at kilometer 5,858 . With a gradient of around ten per thousand, the route leads past seven block points , an RTB system for both directions and the Tricesimo San Pelagio stop to Tarcento train station. The RTB system located in kilometer 9.084 serves to control the temperature of the wheelsets and is connected to the exit signal of the Tarcento station. If there is an alarm while a train is passing, the train is stopped at the Tarcento station to check the affected wagon.

After another four blocks and the Artegna stop, the Gemona del Friuli station follows, which has numerous tracks. The single-track railway line Sacile-Gemona del Friuli reaches the Pontafelbahn shortly before the Gemona station. With a further gradient of nine per thousand, after five block points, there is an RTB system at kilometer 35.103, which is only used for northbound travel and is connected to the Carnia exit signal, and finally the Carnia train station at the Venzone stop . In this section of the route, the superstructure was designed as a slab track.

The tunnel-like connection between the Campiolo and Monte Palis tunnels crosses the Torrente Glagno river near Campiolo

Shortly after the train station, the route leads over the 33 meter long Rio-Togliezzo bridge, after another 200 meters over the 1003 meter long Pontebbana-e-Fella viaduct over the Alps-Adriatic motorway (A23) into the Campiolo tunnel . For climatic reasons, this is directly connected to the Monte Palis tunnel and has an incline of 14.37 ‰. The Campiolo-Monte-Palis tunnel is only separated from the Zuc-dal-Bor tunnel, which is 9222 meters long and has an incline of 14.47 ‰, by the 209 meter long Val-Aupa Viaduct . The Saletto-Pontedimuro Viaduct with a length of 115 meters connects the Zuc-dal-Bor tunnel with the 4,075- meter-long Le Piche San Rocco tunnel.

After the tunnel, the Pontebba station follows, where the remains of the freight station with the former customs clearance can be seen, which became superfluous after the border controls in the created Schengen area were discontinued. The station was dismantled on four tracks, three of which are equipped with platforms. The south portal of the 5,716 meter long San Leopoldo tunnel connects to the Pontebba train station. The Bagni Santa Caterina stop, which was closed in 2003 due to insufficient passenger numbers, is located directly between the S. Leopoldo and the 8,067 meter long Malborghetto tunnel. The platform of this stop reached around 100 meters into the tunnel. The three Ugovizza Viaducts connect to the east portal of the Malborghetto tunnel and lead over Strada Statale 13, the old railway line, the Fella and the Alps-Adriatic motorway (A23). This is followed by the unoccupied, newly built Ugovizza Valbruna station , which is followed by the 6,934 meter long Camporosso tunnel. The Priesnig Viaduct connects the Camporosso - with the 1052 meter long Tarvisio Tunnel, to which the Tarvisio Boscoverde train station connects. Some of the station sidings extend into the tunnel. The section equipped with RS4 Codici ends at the entrance signal for the station in kilometer 87.192. Apart from a few pairs of freight trains, which are run by ÖBB in cooperation with the Italian RU Linea sra , locomotives are changed for international trains at Tarvisio Boscoverde station .

Train operation

passenger traffic

Since the opening of the new line, the number of passenger trains has been falling. While there were up to six international long-distance trains until the timetable change in June 2001, the 2011 timetable only had two night trains per direction. Since the 2012 summer timetable there has been a pair of trains in the morning and a pair of trains in the evening that travel from Villach to Udine and back. This is an EU project between the FUC ( Ferrovie Udine-Cividale ), which is owned by the Province of Friuli-Venezia Giulia , and the ÖBB. The rolling stock is provided by the ÖBB, the locomotive ( Siemens ES64U4 ) is provided by the FUC. During the day, ÖBB intercity buses, which are offered at the rail tariff, are used to expand the international train connections . In the area between Udine and Carnia there are significantly more train pairs, in the afternoon even at almost hourly intervals (2009).

From December 2013 there was again a long-distance train between Vienna and Venice with the EuroCity pair 30/31 . Until December 2017, the set consisted of an ÖBB 1216 and five long-distance cars . It was provided by the ÖBB and operated by Trenord . Since December 2017, the Railjet 131/132 has been operating a second day connection between Vienna and Venice. At the same time, the EuroCity 30/31 were switched to Railjet (new train number RJ 130/131). Until the beginning of 2019, the Railjet , which was actually designed as push-pull trains , was not allowed to be pushed on the Italian side, which is why the trains from Vienna to Venice and back were pulled by the locomotive. After an introductory phase in January and February of 2019, during which, among other things, the necessary training for the locomotive staff was carried out, regular push-pull train operation began in March 2019 with an activated control car in the direction of Vienna.

Freight transport

In freight traffic, the route is operated by international trains on the Austria-Italy route and by shunting goods trains to and from Osoppo . The majority of the trains in service are the mixed trains from Villach Süd large marshalling yard to Cervignano del Friuli , Bologna , Milan and Naples . Furthermore, tank car trains filled with fuel run several times a day on weekdays to the seaports in Trieste and Venice. Trains loaded with new cars from the Fiat factories in the Czech Republic , to Verona , Fossacesia and Turin also use the route. Also steel trains from Cittadella to the works of Voestalpine AG in Linz travel the route. There are also trains on the Rolling Road from Salzburg to Trieste.

Vehicle use

The E.444 , E.656 and E.402A series are currently used on the long-distance passenger line , while the E.652 series, which was still used in long- distance passenger transport in the last few years of the 20th century, has been increasingly used in freight transport since the new line opened becomes. Local passenger transport is currently provided by the Minuetto ALe 501/502 and ALe 801/940 railcars . In the outskirts of the day, trains drawn or pushed by the E.464 series continue to be used. From the second half of the 20th century until shortly before the old route was closed, the majority of the ALe 840 series railcars were used in local passenger transport . The E.405 , E.412 , E.652 and E.655 series are primarily used in freight transport . From 2007, the Trenitalia series E.412 and the ÖBB series 1216 were used in cross-border traffic in front of mixed freight trains from and to Cervignano del Friuli and the trains on the rolling road to and from Trieste, due to the lack of SCMT equipment of the ÖBB -The use of the series ended in 2008. Since the beginning of 2009, a freight train from San Stino di Livenza to Villach and back run by the private railway company Linea sra has been using a class 186 locomotive for the entire run.

Newly built bike path on the old route in the former Tarvisio Città stop

After the opening of the new line, the old line in the Canal Valley and Eisental along the Fella River was closed. Parts of the old railway line are gradually being expanded into a cycle path . Between the state border in Thörl-Maglern and the former Tarvisio Centrale train station , however, the cycle path was built a little further north due to the tunnels to be renovated and partly uses existing roads.
