RS4 Codici was a train control system used in Italy . It is an abbreviation for the Italian term Ripetizione Segnali a 4 codici , which means signal repetition system with 4 terms in German . It was replaced by the successor system SCMT .

The system transfers the position of the next signal in the direction of travel to the driver's cab of the traction vehicle . The device helps the driver to reliably recognize the signals even in poor visibility conditions or at signal locations in curves.

On the vehicle side, RS4 Codici consists of the following parts:

An alternating current flows in the rails with a frequency of 50  Hz , which is modulated with a frequency that depends on the signal position :

Modulation frequency designation meaning
(no) Assenza di Codice Transmission failure, for example when driving on an inappropriately equipped track in the train station
75 min −1 Via Impedita The next signal shows "Halt", entering a dead end, a partially occupied track or a track with a very short braking distance
120 min −1 Riduzione di Velocità The next signal shows a speed limit
(to 30 km / h, 60 km / h or 100 km / h)
180 min −1 Preavvisa The next signal shows free travel, but the signal after the next "Stop" or a speed limit
270 min −1 Via Libera Free travel without restrictions

Changes the code, this must by the driver by pressing the RIC be acknowledged within three seconds, otherwise on the braking action group an emergency braking is initiated.

BACC is a further development of RS4 Codici for high-speed traffic with nine signal aspects. Both train control systems are outdated and will be replaced by ETCS . The SCMT system was developed for migration. With this, the signal aspects are transmitted with Eurobalises , which can also transmit information according to the ETCS Level 1 standard. This enables the route infrastructure to be converted, which initially only required a minor modification for signal reception ( balise transmission module ) on the locomotives and is prepared for the later conversion. In May 2017, according to RFI, no more routes with RS4 Codici were in operation.
