The E.656 / E.655 series is a six-axle Italian electric locomotive series with the nickname Caimano (German: Kaiman ).
technical features
The E.656 series is the last electric locomotive series built in Italy in which the traction power is controlled with an electromechanical step switch . However, the speed steps do not have to be set individually by the engine driver when starting, but can be controlled via an automatic start-up system. The locomotive is equipped with 12 motors, which can be connected in four different combinations in groups in parallel or in series. This means that the motors can be assigned voltages of 250 V, 500 V, 750 V and 1000 V. A finely structured subdivision of the speed levels is also achieved by means of five-level field weakening. Due to the high losses and heat development, series resistors are only switched on briefly when starting up.
Sub-series
The locomotives of the E.656 series were procured in six construction lots that differed only slightly from one another. The early series received a converter with 180 kVA power for the auxiliary drive , later two converters with 120 kVA each were installed. The last series (E.656.551-608) is equipped with multiple and push-pull train controls for use in regional traffic. The series for E.656 was originally designed for a top speed of 160 km / h, but the driving characteristics turned out to be inadequate, which resulted in a limitation to 150 km / h. Only the machines of the sixth series, which were equipped with roll dampers, were approved for a short time and limited to the Direttissima Rome-Florence for 160 km / h.
The individual series:
- E.656.001-104
- E.656.201-251
- E.656.252-307
- E.656.159-200
- E.656.401-550
- E.656.551-608
commitment
The E.656 series is used in passenger and freight train traffic. For many years it formed the backbone of Italian express train traction. In the 1990s, for example, the TEE Mediolanum on the Italian side was covered with an E.656. In the future, almost the entire series is to be gradually relocated to freight transport. To do this, the gear ratio is changed in favor of the tensile force. The modified machines have a maximum speed of 120 km / h and are redrawn as E.655. Only the sixth series (with push-pull train control) remained in regional transport - the main areas of use were Liguria and the Italian north-west. In mid-2017, the number of E.655 / E.656 was reduced to around 60 machines, all of which are assigned to the freight transport sector. At the beginning of 2019, 22 locomotives were in service in front of night and intercity trains in Sicily, and around 20 locomotives in front of freight trains on the mainland.
