The FS ALe 840 is an Italian electric multiple unit. A total of 73 vehicles were built for various railways by several manufacturers. The vehicles were popularly known as Bozener cigars because of their appearance . The similar ALe 660 series emerged from the Ale 840 .

history

Outwardly, the vehicles are similar in shape and color to the multiple units of the ALe 883 series . The front area with the arrangement of the glass panes is particularly different. As with the ALe 883 series , the doors were designed as four-leaf folding doors that can be pneumatically controlled.

The vehicles are used especially in mixed trains with the Le 840 sidecars , which are almost identical in appearance to the railcars. Other train compositions consist of a three-part version of the vehicles with a middle Le 640 sidecar . These vehicles were a little shorter than the Le 840 and had a medium entry area. Until 1956, the class ALe 840 railcars owned 3rd class, after which they owned 2nd class.

The use of the vehicles in the northern Italian three-phase network shows a special chapter in their operational history . 26 vehicles were coupled with the control car Lebc 840 , which was equipped with two pantographs , similar to the FS E.432 , and was equipped with mercury vapor rectifiers . In this composition, the vehicles also ran under three-phase current . The advantage of the vehicles was that they could be used on lines with multiple voltage changes. The grinding distance of the pantographs on these vehicles was approximately 20 cm. Therefore, there was not only the requirement to lower the pantographs before each train station entrance in order to prevent bow derailment, but sometimes also on the open route, especially with poor track conditions. For this reason, the maximum speed of the train of 150 km / h under three-phase catenary could not be maintained. The vehicles in this composition were used especially on the Italian Riviera , but also on the routes around Alessandria . Half of them were divided into Turin and Genoa .
