Italian Riviera refers to the Ligurian coast. It extends from the French border to the foothills of Tuscany along the Gulf of Genoa . The section from Genoa to Tuscany is known as the Riviera di Levante , the section from Genoa to the French border as the Riviera di Ponente . Together with the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur) it forms the actual Riviera , which was a model for all other namesake.

The Riviera is known for its mild climate in all seasons and is therefore a valued holiday region. Well-known holiday resorts on the Riviera di Ponente are Bordighera , Alassio , Diano Marina , Sanremo and Ventimiglia . Well-known vacation spots on the Riviera di Levante are: Portofino , Santa Margherita Ligure , Sestri Levante , Lerici and the Cinque Terre .

In particular, the sections of the Riviera di Ponente in the area around Sanremo are also known as the Riviera dei Fiori ( Riviera of Flowers ) because of the characteristic flower fields and flower markets .
