The Riviera di Levante (in Ligurian: Rivëa de Levante ) is a geographical coastal region within the Italian region of Liguria and a section of the Italian Riviera . It extends east of the regional capital Genoa to the mouth of the Magra River in the province of La Spezia . Occasionally, the northernmost point of the Ligurian Sea near the mouth of the Leira River is given as the western limit . Then the Riviera di Levante includes the entire urban area of Genoa with the exception of the Crevari and Vesima districts .

The geographical counterpart of the Riviera di Levante is the Riviera di Ponente , which extends from the western city limits of Genoa (or the Leira river) to the French border at Ventimiglia .

Surname

The name Riviera is derived from the Latin ripa (bank), which changes to riva in Genoese Italian. Riviera was the name given to the coastal region under Genoese influence, divided into a western part (ponente, where the sun “sits”) and an eastern part (levante, where the sun “rises”).
