In ancient times the area was inhabited by the Casmoriti , a Ligurian family. After lengthy disputes it was conquered by the Romans , who died in 667 BC. Founded the village of Recina (also Ricina ) there. The place quickly developed into an important castrum on the Via Aurelia .

During the High Middle Ages , Recco received the first pieve in the area. The other three had gone to Avegno, Uscio and Rapallo. The parish churches were subordinated to the Bishop of Milan , who had the Ligurian territory under his power after the Lombards invasion . During the Middle Ages and the subsequent modern era , the city was subordinate to the Republic of Genoa , whose administrative property it became in the 12th century.

Like the nearby Rapallo, the city was attacked and devastated by the Saracens in 1557 and 1646 . During the raids, a large number of young residents of both cities were kidnapped and enslaved . In the following centuries, Recco used its location on the Ligurian Sea to develop into a construction site for sailing ships and galleys . The Republic of Genoa was currently the largest client.

In 1747 Recco, like Genoa, was captured by the Austrian army and half a century later, in 1797, by the French under Napoléon Bonaparte . The entire Ligurian region was included in the first French empire . After the fall of Napoleon, Liguria and thus Recco were incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815 and finally into the Kingdom of Italy as part of the Risorgimento in 1860 .

During the Second World War , the city was badly damaged and partially destroyed in Allied bombing raids. The goal was Recco because of the strategically important railway line, which crosses the city on a viaduct and connects Genoa with southern Italy. The same fate befell the Tigullian community of Zoagli for the same reasons . With the destruction of the two railway bridges, Tigullio was practically cut off from the regional capital of Liguria (Genoa). The viaducts were completely rebuilt in the post-war period.

Today the municipality is a renowned tourist destination on the Golfo Paradiso and, thanks to its location, is a kind of gateway to the Riviera di Levante and Tigullio for the city of Genoa .

In 2001, the municipality of Recco was the President of the Italian Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi , the city charter granted.
