The municipality is located in the Fontanabuona valley at a distance of 34 kilometers from the Ligurian capital Genoa .

Together with 16 other municipalities, Cicagna forms the Comunità Montana Fontanabuona . In Cicagna there is the natural history museum La via dell'ardesia (German: The path of the slate ).
