Chiavari ['kja: vari] ( Ligurian Ciävai ) is an Italian commune with 27,725 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Liguria region , province of Genoa (GE) .
geography
location
The place lies between Rapallo in the northwest and Sestri Levante in the southeast on the coast of the Golfo Tigullio at the mouth of the river Entella and on the railway line Pisa-Genova . Chiavari covers an area of around 20 km² and extends in front of the Trebbia Valley to a height of around 50 m above sea level.

The neighboring municipalities are Zoagli in the northwest and Lavagna in the southeast. In the wider area are Rapallo and Nervi in the northwest and Sestri Levante and La Spezia in the southeast.
history
Founded as Clavarum (lat. Valley key), Chiavari still has a key in its coat of arms . But more recent excavations have revealed a city of the dead from pre-Roman times .
The families of Giuseppe Garibaldi and Giuseppe Mazzini come from Chiavari .
The city has given its name to the Cima Chiavari in Antarctica since 2002 .

Education and culture
Chiavari is the seat of an episcopal diocese and therefore has an important archive . In Chiavari there are secondary schools, a library with around 50,000 volumes, a cultural association and, last but not least, in Palazzo Torriglia, a gallery with pictures by Genoese painters from the period between 1600 and 1900.
