Santo Stefano d'Aveto is an Italian commune with 1057 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Liguria region , metropolitan city of Genoa . The municipality is located in the Aveto Natural Park and is the sponsor of the Arancione Association of the TCI .

The neighboring municipalities are Bedonia and Tornolo in the province of Parma , Borzonasca and Rezzoaglio in the province of Genoa and Ferriere in the province of Piacenza .

geography

Santo Stefano d'Aveto is located in the Val d'Aveto , on the banks of the Aveto River . The community, located in a hollow and dominated by the 1804 meter high Monte Maggiorasca , is itself at an altitude of 1012 meters above sea level. It is about 76 kilometers from the regional capital Genoa . Various hiking trails lead from Santo Stefano d'Aveto to the peaks of Monte Maggiorasca, Monte Groppo Rosso (1594 meters), Monte Roncalla (1658 meters), Monte Penna (1735 meters) and Monte Aiona (1702 meters). The latter can be reached from the district of Amborzasco .

Santo Stefano d'Aveto and four other Ligurian communities belong to the Comunità Montana Valli Aveto, Graveglia e Sturla .

The municipality was awarded the ISO 14001 environmental certificate and received the Bandiera Arancione from the Touring Club Italiano , which honors quality in the field of tourism and the environment.

The economy of Santo Stefano d'Aveto is based on agriculture and tourism . In the winter months, thanks to a number of ski slopes and cross-country trails , the municipality is the destination of many winter sports enthusiasts from the province of Genoa and the neighboring provinces.

The fort

The municipality belongs to the region of the Quattro Province , a mountain region in the north of the Italian Apennines , consisting of the three provinces of Pavia , Alessandria and Piacenza as well as the metropolitan city of Genoa , which is characterized by the use of common costumes , songs and ancient dances . A clear Celtic ancestry can be seen in the latter . A traditional musical instrument of this region is the piffero , which is accompanied by an accordion or a muesa , a bagpipe . This music formation traditionally plays at festivals and dances.

Sacred buildings

The parish church of Santo Stefano d'Aveto is the Santuario della Madonna di Guadalupe , which houses the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe Hidalgo , which was brought to the Santuario in 1804 by the Chiesa di San Pietro in Piacenza . Since 1811 there has also been a cloth in the church depicting the Virgin Mary . It was donated to the church by Cardinal Giuseppe Maria Doria Pamphilj , the State Secretary of Pius VII . Allegedly, the cloth is said to have blown on one of Andrea Doria's ships when it went into the naval battle of Lepanto in 1571 .

Military buildings

At Santo Stefano d'Aveto is the Castello di Santo Stefano , an ancient fortress from the 12th century. It is considered to be one of the most interesting fortifications in Liguria. The fort is located in an extensive valley basin on Monte Maggiorasca. It is almost completely surrounded by a lawn and is not far from the center of the municipality. In 1495 the Malaspina sold the margravate Santo Stefano to the Fieschi.

Santo Stefano d'Aveto lies on the provincial road 654, which the municipality with Rezzoaglio connects. There is no direct connection to a motorway. The next motorway connection is at Lavagna and Chiavari to the A12 .

Public transport

The nearest train station is Chiavari train station on the Pisa – La Spezia – Genoa railway line , which is located in the Genoa - La Spezia section .

The bus station of the Azienda Trasporti Provinciali is located at the Chiavari train station . There is a regular bus connection to Santo Stefano d'Aveto.
