Giovanni Mariani (born June 17, 1919 in Santo Stefano d'Aveto , Genoa province , Italy , † January 23, 1991 ) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop and Vatican diplomat .

Life

Giovanni Mariani received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Genoa on March 21, 1942 .

On October 16, 1967, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of MissUA and ordered him to Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Senegal . The Cardinal Secretary of State Amleto Giovanni Cardinal Cicognani , donated him episcopal ordination on December 3 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Archbishop Sergio Pignedoli , and the Bishop of Bobbio , Pietro Zuccarino .

On September 20, 1971, Giovanni Mariani was also Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Niger . On October 17, 1973, Giovanni Mariani also became an Apostolic Delegate in Mali and Mauritania . Paul VI appointed him on January 11, 1975. to the Apostolic Nuncio in Venezuela . In January 1978 he became an official in the Vatican State Secretariat . On April 25, 1980, Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Greece . Mariani resigned on May 5, 1990 from this office.
