Luigi Barbarito

Luigi Barbarito (born April 19, 1922 in Atripalda , Avellino Province , Italy ; † March 12, 2017 in Pietradefusi , Avellino Province, Italy) was a diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Luigi Barbarito was ordained a priest on August 20, 1944 . Until 1947 he studied canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In November 1953 he was appointed Apostolic Delegate to Oceania.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 11, 1969 Titular Archbishop of Fiorentino and Apostolic Nuncio in Haiti . The cardinal secretary emeritus Amleto Giovanni Cardinal Cicognani donated him the episcopal ordination on August 10 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Curia Bishop Agostino Casaroli and Pasquale Venezia , Bishop of Avellino .

On April 5, 1975, he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Niger and Senegal and Apostolic Delegate in Guinea-Bissau , Mali and Mauritania . On June 10, 1978 he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Australia . On January 21, 1986 he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in the United Kingdom and on April 13, 1993 he was promoted to Apostolic Nuncio there. In 1994, Barbarito became doyen of the diplomatic corps there. Queen Elizabeth II made him the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order in 1996 . Barbarito was also a Grand Cross Knight of the Order of Constantine .

Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation on July 31, 1997.
