The Trebbia is a river in Liguria and Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy. It is one of the 4 right tributaries of the Po and rises on Monte Prelà in the Ligurian Apennines northeast of Genoa and flows over 115 kilometers ( including river bends) to the NNE until it flows into the Po in Piacenza . The most important place in the valley of the Trebbia is the municipality Bobbio with the religiously and art-historically important monastery of San Colombano . The upper Trebbia Valley ("Alta Val Trebbia") with eight municipalities (Torriglia, Rondanina, Propata, Fascia, Montebruno, Rovegno, Fontanigorda and Gorreto) extends to Bobbio.

Hydrology

The Trebbia belongs to the Torrente type , a wild river with very different water flow and currents depending on the season. A torrente has a wide, often deeply incised bed ( gorge , canyon ) filled with rubble , which sometimes falls largely or completely dry when there is no rainfall. The catchment area is approximately 1000 km 3 ; the annual rainfall in the headwaters can be up to 2000 mm / a. The mean discharge ( MQ ) is 40 m 3 / s - maximum values ( HHQ ) range up to 2500 m 3 / s. When it exits the mountains into the foreland, the flow speed of the Trebbia decreases significantly and it sediments large amounts of sand and gravel , which shape the " interwoven river " downstream to the mouth of the Po.

fauna and Flora

The Trebbia Valley is an important transit route for many migratory birds and a nesting place for many species, such as B. the little ringed plover or the curlew.

Valle Trebbia

history

The Trebbia was called Trebia in antiquity and was the river on which in the Second Punic War in December 218 BC. Chr. Hannibal defeated the Romans (see Battle of the Trebia ).

A second battle of the Trebbia took place on June 18, 1799 in the Second Coalition War , in which Russian and Austrian troops drove the French troops out of northern Italy and destroyed the French satellite states ( Cisalpine Republic ). On February 24, 1799, Alexander Wassiljewitsch Suvorov was appointed Commander-in-Chief for the united Russian-Austrian contingent . This was followed by the battles of the Adda on April 27th, the entry into Milan on April 30th, the fall of Turin on May 22nd, the battle of the Trebbia on June 18th, and finally the battle of Novi on August 15th who decided the campaign.
