The Gulf of La Spezia , also the Gulf of the Poets ( Golfo dei Poeti ), is a wide and relatively deep bay of the Ligurian Sea . It is located in the easternmost section of the Italian region of Liguria and is named after the provincial capital La Spezia , which lies at the apex of the gulf.

In addition to an important commercial port (with a focus on container traffic ), the Gulf of La Spezia is also the location of the main arsenal of the Italian Navy . The two localities Porto Venere and Lerici are located on both extremities of the gulf . Both are popular excursion and travel destinations.

The Gulf of La Spezia is one of the four administrative districts of the province of La Spezia . The other three districts are the Riviera Spezzina with the Cinque Terre , the Val di Vara and the Val di Magra .

geography

The Gulf of La Spezia opens in a south-east direction and is surrounded by a mountain range. It is bounded by the headland of Porto Venere in the west (with the islands of Palmaria , Tino and Tinetto at the top) and by the stretch of coast in front of Lerici and Tellaro in the east. Due to this location, it is only exposed to the Sciroccowind and shielded from the stronger Libeccio .

At the opening of the gulf, a 2210 meter long concrete pontoon was erected, which only leaves two passages 400 and 200 meters wide at its corners.

The gulf is approximately 4.5 kilometers long and 3 to 3.5 kilometers wide.
