The Val di Vara (in German Varatal ) is a valley in the Italian region of Liguria . It is located in the province of La Spezia and is traversed by the eponymous river Vara . The opening of the valley surrounded by the Ligurian Apennines lies at the confluence of the Vara in the Magra river in the outskirts of the municipality of Vezzano Ligure .

With its 575 square kilometers and 30,275 inhabitants, the Val di Vara is  the largest administrative district in the province of La Spezia, while at the same time it has the lowest population. Due to the low population density , the valley has a large number of small, original settlements.

Along the course of the river, with its ancient castles and villages, there is a connecting road that connects the province of La Spezia to the metropolitan city of Genoa . The Via Aurelia , which crosses the valley floor , is also important .

Along with the Val di Magra , the Riviera Spezzina and the Gulf of La Spezia , the Val di Vara is the fourth administrative district of the province. It is subordinate to the administrative authority of the Magra Basin and the Montemarcello-Magra Natural Park .

Administrative areas

Politically, the Val di Vara is subject to the authority of the Province of La Spezia.

Administratively, the valley itself is divided into the Comunità Montana della Media e Bassa Val di Vara and the Comunità Montana dell'Alta Val di Vara . Corresponding municipalities are:
