Follo (in Ligurian : Folo ) is an Italian commune with 6303 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Liguria region . Politically it belongs to the province of La Spezia .

geography

The place is located about 8 km north of the provincial capital La Spezia , about 77 km southeast of the regional capital Genoa and about 330 km northwest of the Italian capital Rome in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone D, 1 433 GG. Follo lies on an important connecting route between the upper and middle Val di Vara , the Gulf of La Spezia and the Sarzana plain . Due to its strategically important location, the municipality is a transit point for travelers to La Spezia, Sarzana and Brugnato in the upper Val di Vara. The river Durasca forms the municipality boundary to Vezzano Ligure in the south , and the place is on the river Vara . Other neighboring communities are Beverino , Bolano , Calice al Cornoviglio , Podenzana ( MS ) and Riccò del Golfo di Spezia .

Follo belongs to the Comunità Montana della Media e Bassa Val di Vara and forms part of the Montemarcello-Magra Natural Park with its territory .

Follo includes the districts (Frazioni) Bastremoli, Carnea, Follo Castello (also called Follo Alto ), Follomonte, Piana Battolla, Piano di Follo, Sorbolo , Tivegna, Torenco, Valdurasca and Via Romana.

history

Follo originated in the Middle Ages and was first mentioned in writing in 1197. The name comes from the words fullo or follare ( walking ). In 1224 the Republic of Genoa took control of the town and considerably expanded the existing city walls, only parts of which can be seen today. In the 14th century Castruccio Castracani took power in the place, after which the Visconti , the Sforza and the Malaspina ruled . The statutes ( Capitula et seu Statuta civilia et criminalia loci et Communis Folli ) come from the year 1578. In 1797 the place came back to Genoa and belonged to the district Giurisdizione del Golfo di Venere . Since 1923 the place belongs to the province of La Spezia.
