Monterosso al Mare is an Italian fishing village on the Ligurian coast .

With 1402 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) it is the largest town in the Cinque Terre and part of the national park of the same name on the Ligurian coast ( Riviera di Levante ) between La Spezia and Sestri Levante . Monterosso is the northernmost of the five villages, all of which are located on an approximately twelve-kilometer stretch of coast.

During a storm in October 2011, the place suffered from severe devastation from floods.

geography

On the beach of Monterosso

Monterosso stretches for around 1.5 kilometers and is divided into two parts: the small old town is separated from the newer Fegina district by a rock protruding into the sea, on which the striking watchtower Torre Aurora from the 16th century rises. A 100 m long pedestrian tunnel leads through the rock.

Until 2009, the municipality was part of the now dissolved Comunità Montana della Riviera Spezzina administrative community .

Due to its location between steep slopes where olives and vines are grown, the beaches of the village are quite small, but the Cinque Terre is popular with both Italians and foreign day tourists (especially Americans) for hiking and swimming. Hiking trails lead to neighboring Vernazza , up the slope to Soviore or to the cape-like Punta Mesco and on to Levanto . A special feature of the village is the Gigante , a stone figure carved out of the rock, which used to hold a dance terrace and was partially damaged by a storm surge in 1966.

Regular events

  • Lemon Festival: the entire place is decorated with different varieties of lemons
  • Infiorata: del Corpus Domini: on Corpus Christi day the streets are decorated with colorful drawings
  • Falò di San Giovanni: a festival in honor of San Giovanni on June 24th, which combines Christian traditions with celebrations for the summer solstice with a procession, fireworks and a funeral pyre where local children collect and burn old things .
  • Madonna del Soviore: pilgrimage procession on August 14th

traffic

Like all villages in the Cinque Terre, Monterosso is traffic-calmed. Cars without a permit must be parked outside the village. The village can be easily reached by the Pisa – Genoa railway line , the train station is in Fegina. There is also a bus line in the village, the so-called Ecobus , which also goes to the districts on the slopes.
