Vernazza is a north-western Italian municipality with 779 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of La Spezia in Liguria . The municipality is the second northernmost of the five villages of the Cinque Terre . The further south Corniglia , also one of the Cinqueterre, political forms a fraction of Vernazza.

Vernazza is a member of the I borghi più belli d'Italia association (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Vernazza is one of the still preserved fishing villages on the Italian Riviera . The place was founded around the year 1000, the Doria castle at the top of the ledge dates from the 11th century. In the first half of the 13th century, the church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia was built opposite.

Until 2009, the municipality was part of the now dissolved Comunità Montana della Riviera Spezzina administrative community .

Vernazza was hit by heavy rainfall and flooding on October 25, 2011, which caused considerable damage to the facades and buildings.

Vernazza has a railway station on the Pisa – Genoa railway line , which connects the place with the neighboring villages and with La Spezia and Sestri Levante .
