history

Cattedrale dei Ss. Pietro, Lorenzo e Colombano

The place originated in the 7th century as the abbey of the monks of San Colombano. From the 8th century, the place is mentioned in several diplomas, including Charles III. , Otto III. and Heinrich II. Innocent II elevated the place to a diocese , which lasted until 1820. Since 999 the place was allowed to call itself a city. The place, which is under the protection of the Republic of Genoa , was saved by the Republic of Genoa in 1215 against attempts to take over the Malaspina and installed the Fieschi family as governors. After the Ghibellines took over as rulers of Genoa in 1313, the lords of Brugnato fled to Pontremoli . Thereafter, the Malaspina took over the place until the 16th century, who gave it to the Fregoso as a feudal system . With the popular uprising of 1530, the place returned to Genoa. In 1820 the diocese was incorporated into that of Luni-Sarzana, which became part of the La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato diocese from 1929 .

Culture

In 2007 Brugnato was awarded the Bandiera Arancione by the Touring Club Italiano , which recognizes outstanding quality in the fields of nature and tourism. In addition, the municipality, as the thirteenth Ligurian village, was included in the I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).
