Paschalis Baylon (Spanish: Pascual Baylón ; * May 16, 1540 in Torrehermosa , Spain ; † May 17, 1592 in the Villareal Monastery near Valencia ) was a lay brother in the Franciscan Order and is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

As a child, Paschal Baylon had to work as a shepherd for a landlord in order to help support his family. He taught himself to read and write. At the age of seventeen Paschalis got to know the Franciscan order and was immediately enthusiastic about the spirituality of the community. He resigned from his landlord and applied for admission to the order. After several years of probation, he was accepted as a lay brother in Monforte monastery in 1564. Paschalis was characterized by deep humility, great willingness to make sacrifices and a deep love for people. He worked in various monasteries of his order and devoted himself to silent adoration in the monastery church with particular devotion . He died on May 17, 1592 in the Villareal monastery near Valencia. In the period that followed, numerous miracles are said to have occurred at his grave . Paschal Baylon was canonized in 1690 . Pope Leo XIII. appointed him patron saint of all Eucharistic associations and brotherhoods in 1897 . In addition, Paschal Baylon is venerated by the shepherds and cooks as patron. The saint's relics were burned in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War .

Most of the depictions show Paschal Baylon as a Franciscan brother during Eucharistic adoration. A shepherd's staff and a garden shovel are often added as attributes. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo created the most famous depiction of St. Paschal Baylon for the Aranjuez monastery. In the church of San Francesco della Vigna in Venice an altar is dedicated to the saint. In the altar there is a wooden statue of the saint by the Val Gardena sculptor Marchiò Molziner .
