San Francesco della Vigna is next to Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari the second Franciscan church in Venice , directly on the lagoon on the northern edge of the city with a widely visible campanile . It is located in the Sestiere Castello near the Arsenal .

history

The church owes its name to a vineyard (ital. Vigna ), which came to the Franciscans on June 26, 1253 by testamentary decree of Marco Ziani, son of Doge Pietro Ziani . A chapel dedicated to St. Mark stood on the property . According to legend, when Mark was staying here on the journey from Aquileia to Rome , an angel appeared who greeted him with the words “Pax tibi Marce Evangelista meus” (“Peace to you, Mark, my evangelist”). As a result, these words are attached to most Venetian depictions of the Lion of Mark.

Canaletto : Church and Campo San Francesco della Vigna , 18th century

On a city view by Jacopo de 'Barbari around 1500, a Gothic church with a cloister and extensions were found at this point, some of which have been preserved. The date of construction of the three-nave Gothic church is not known. The Franciscan Friars Minor lived in the adjoining monastery , while the Minorites lived in the monastery of the Frari Church. The reconstruction of the church in need of renovation in the 16th century led to the recognition of the Friars Minor as an independent branch of the order and the support of Doge Andrea Gritti , whose family palace was opposite the church and who laid the foundation stone for the new Renaissance church in 1534. Construction was completed in 1554. The original plan by Jacopo Sansovino provided for a dome, but this was changed by Sansovino himself in favor of the now existing hall church with five side family chapels each. Andrea Palladio was entrusted with the construction of the facade, which had already started in 1565 .

The richly decorated interior of the church houses works by Veronese ( Resurrection , Holy Family ), a Madonna by Giovanni Bellini , a Mary in Adoration of the Child by Antonio da Negroponte , an Adoration of the Kings by Federico Zuccari , a sacrifice of Isaac by Giovanni Battista Pittoni and Marble reliefs by Pietro Lombardo . There are also the tombs of the Doges Andrea Gritti , Marcantonio Giustinian and Francesco and Alvise Contarini in San Francesco della Vigna.

In the sixth chapel (Cappella Priuli) on the left side of the nave there is a wooden statue carved by Marchiò Molziner in 1691, which represents the holy Paschal Baylon .
