Marcantonio Giustinian (born March 2, 1619 in Venice , † March 23, 1688 ibid) was the 107th Doge of Venice . He ruled from 1684 to 1688.

family

Marcantonio was the fourth of six sons of Pietro and Marina Giustinian, who came from two different branches of the family. The family's head office was the spacious Palazzo Giustinian on the Grand Canal , where Richard Wagner composed music for his operas Tristan and Isolde and Parsifal in the 19th century .

Life

Giustinian was a pious and educated man who spoke Latin , Greek, and Hebrew . After studying philosophy , theology and history at the University of Padua , Marcantonio held various public offices. He was administrator ( provveditore ) during the war in Crete and ambassador to the French king , who had knighted him. In Venice itself he was consigliere and member of the Council of Ten .

He wasn't married.

The Doge's Office

He was elected on January 26, 1684 in the first ballot with the required majority, but accepted the election only reluctantly and thanks to a lot of persuasion by the electors, as he supposedly would have preferred to retire to the monastery of San Giorgio .

His short reign was marked by a succession of lavish and lavish festivals. For Giustinian, every occasion was good for a festival that began with a Te Deum in the church and continued with a banquet, which he also initiated with a Te Deum, which soon earned him the nickname il doge del Te Deum .

After his solemn enthronement , the victories of Venice against the Turks were celebrated by the captain-general Francesco Morosini with thanksgiving services, festivals, dances and city lights, with the imaginative decoration of the Jewish organizers from the ghetto . Another reason for splendor, nightly lighting, ship corsairs and balls was the carnival , which already attracted crowds of tourists from Europe.

Giustinian died unexpectedly on March 23, 1688 and, according to his wishes, was buried in the habit of a Franciscan in San Francesco della Vigna .
