Antonio da Negroponte: Mary Enthroned with the Child; Venice, San Francesco della Vigna

Antonio da Negroponte (active in Venice in the 2nd half of the 15th century ) was an Italian painter and probably also a clergyman. There are also the name variants Antonios o Chalkideus and Antonio Falier ; the preferred spelling at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence is Antonio da Negroponte .

Antonio da Negroponte may be the son of Greek parents. He probably came from the island of Negroponte, part of the Venetian colonial area . He was probably trained in Venice or Padua , where he probably also worked in part. Exact dates about his life are hardly known. Presumably he is identical to Antonio Faliro , who was sued by Jacopo Bellini in 1469 in a money matter. In two further letters from 1449 and 1497 a Frate Antonio da Negroponte is also mentioned, who is probably identical with him.

The only sure evidence of its existence is a large altarpiece signed “FRATER ANTONIVS / DE NEGROPON PINXIT” depicting Mary Enthroned with the Child , which was supplemented with a bezel-like round arch by an unknown hand in the 16th century . It is located in the Venetian church of San Francesco della Vigna and it shows the handwriting of an artist on the threshold of the Gothic to the Renaissance, who knew how to present his figures lifelike and the background close to nature. Due to its proximity to works by Bartolomeo Vivarini at the same time , the picture is generally dated to the 3rd quarter of the 15th century. Based on the picture, an attempt was made to assign further works to the artist, of which only one further Maria Enthroned with the Child in the Oratorio della Discplina in Legnago received greater recognition.
