Marchiò Molziner , probably also Marcion or Melchior Malsiner, was a native of Val Gardena , born around 1655.

There is evidence that he joined the workshop of the Venetian sculptor Pietro Morando in 1671. In 1704 he ran his own workshop, and in 1714 he is attested again as the owner of a workshop.

Works

Originally, Molziner was probably an ornament sculptor; In Val Gardena several carvers, descendants of Christian Trebinger , were known as frame carvers in the 17th and 18th centuries. As such, he carved in 1702 and 1704 for the sacristy of the nunnery of Sant'Andrea della Zirada in Venice . These works are documented but not preserved.

The only known wooden statue, carved by Molziner in 1691, depicts Saint Paschal Baylon and is located in the church of San Francesco della Vigna in Venice in the sixth chapel (Cappella Priuli) on the left side of the nave. The same wooden figure was placed there after it was removed from the Giustinian Chapel of Santa Maria della Salute in 1898 . According to Paola Rossi, the statue is a work of mediocre stylistic quality and suggests that the artist did not reach the level of his master Morando.
