The Val di Magra is a valley in the northern Italian regions of Tuscany and Liguria . The river Magra flows through the valley level, which lies in the provinces of La Spezia and Massa-Carrara . It forms the center of the ancient Lunigiana region , not far from the Gulf of La Spezia .
The territory is characterized by a variety of different landscapes. Starting with the sandy beaches of the coastal section, over the hills in the vicinity of Luna , on which there are numerous castles and villages, to the massive foothills of the Apennines and the Apuan Alps .
The Val di Magra has always stood out for its strategic importance. It constitutes the main link the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Po valley . The valley is from the ancient Via Aemilia Scauri through which the Lunigiana with the Via Aemilia Lepidi association. The Via degli Abati of Bobbio was added in the 8th century and the Via Francigena in the Middle Ages . The latter was used by countless pilgrims and has several restaurants.
The Val di Magra is one of the four partitions into which the province of La Spezia can be divided. The other three zones are the La Spezia Riviera , the Gulf of La Spezia and the Val di Vara . The valley is under the supervision of the Autorità di Bacino del fiume Magra and the authority of the Montemarcello-Magra Natural Park .

From an administrative point of view, the Val di Magra is divided by the provinces of Massa-Carrara and La Spezia. The communes on the territory of the valley are in the province of Massa-Carrara: Aulla , Villafranca in Lunigiana , Filattiera , Fosdinovo , Pontremoli , Mulazzo and Zeri . On the part of the province of La Spezia they are: Ameglia , Arcola , Bolano , Castelnuovo Magra , Ortonovo , Sarzana , Santo Stefano di Magra and Vezzano Ligure .
