Fosdinovo is an Italian municipality with 4750 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Massa-Carrara in the Tuscany region .

Location of Fosdinovo in the province of Massa-Carrara

The community extends over approx. 49 km². It is located about 130 km northwest of the regional capital Florence , about 15 km northwest of Massa and 10 km northwest of Carrara .

The districts include Canepari, Caniparola, Caprognano, Carignano, Giucano, Marciaso, Posterla and Tendola.

The neighboring municipalities are Aulla , Carrara , Castelnuovo Magra ( SP ), Fivizzano , Luni (SP) and Sarzana (SP).

history

The name of the place comes from the term Faucenova (new pass ), first mentioned in the 11th century. The Castello Malaspina was first mentioned in 1084 without the addition of its name, when the so-called Nobili di Fosdinovo ruled the place together with the Bianchi d'Erberia and then the Luni . On September 1, 1202, the place called the Costituzione del comune . Since 1340 the place was under the Malaspina family .

• Castello Malaspina , castle of Malaspina di Fosdinovo from the line of Malaspina dello Spino Fiorito , mentioned as Castrum Fosdinovense in a document from Lucca as early as 1084 , owned by Malaspina since 1340.
