The municipality is located about 40 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Massa , on the upper reaches of the Magra River .

The districts include Amola, Apella, Bastia, Cisigliana, Costamala, Monti, Panicale, Paretola, Pontebosio, Taponecco, Tavernelle, Terrarossa, Varano and Villa,

The neighboring municipalities are Aulla , Bagnone , Comano , Fivizzano , Monchio delle Corti ( PR ), Podenzana , Tresana and Villafranca in Lunigiana .

Monument to Anacarsi Nardi

There is an old castle in the municipality that is privately owned.

Nearby is a marble statue in honor of the Italian freedom fighter Anacarsi Nardi (1800–1844), who was born in Apella Licciana . The current name of the community, which was called Licciana until 1933, goes back to him .
