Sauxillanges is located on the eastern slopes of the Limagne about 46 kilometers southeast of Clermont-Ferrand and a good twelve kilometers (driving distance) east of Issoire . Attractions

  • The ruins of the Abbey of St-Pierre et St-Paul (12th century, Monument historique, private property). The abbey was founded in 927 by Acfred, Count of Auvergne; the necessary land was already donated by Duke Wilhelm I of Aquitaine († 918). In 1062 the monastery was downgraded to the rank of a priory dependent on Cluny . Pierre de Montboissier, who later became Petrus Venerabilis , entered the Sauxillanges monastery around 1110 at the age of 14 or 16.
  • The Notre-Dame-du-Bois chapel (11th century, Monument historique , private property) was the prior's former private chapel. Its late Gothic vault dates from the 15th century and has some notable keystones .
  • The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste (10th century, Monument historique ) was also rebuilt in the 12th, 15th and 18th centuries. It is only partially preserved.
  • A house on the Place du Marchidial (16th century, Monument historique ) still has a late medieval spiral staircase.
  • When building a house in the Rue de la Halle (15th century, Monument historique ), a defensive tower was integrated into the city wall.
  • The Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park is just a few kilometers away.
